It is true ghost nets act as a weapon of mass destruction. They usually end up floating in the waters trapping marine life all along its route causing a trail of destruction. Ghost nets lost or abandoned at sea due to storms causing strong currents, accidental loss, or purposeful discard are commercial fishing nets.

They remain in the sea and continue to catch and kill fish and other forms of marine life. Destructive fishing practices devastate the marine environment and include bottom trawling, bycatch, the use of poison and explosives and ghost fishing nets. The biggest nets used for bottom trawling have a mouth the size of a rugby pitch. Unfortunately greed for too much of money has also lead to excessive fishing and unscientific use of fishing methods. This will harm the environment, marine life and the livelihood of fishing community and others dependent on this business.

They also causes damage to coral reefs when nets or lines get snagged by the reef. A loss in the number of fish due to habitat destruction can lead to fewer fish and other marine life like turtles, dolphins, eels, manta rays, sharks, coral reefs and a host of other marine creatures get injured when they get entangled in these ghost nets. There are thousands of ghost nets floating in the oceans all over the world resulting in continuous unaccounted death and injuries.

Since they are made of plastic and synthetic material, hence end up as a rubbish in the ocean as they take a long time to degrade. They are not biodegradable. The process of biodegrading when compared to a net made of natural material like coir etc., is seven to times slower. Till such a time these wastes keep floating, lying at the bottom of ocean floor, getting deposited at the sea shores with the tides and unfortunately end up being food to domestic animals or fish and do not get digested and remain in their bodies. This is the sad reality.

India is covered with seas and ocean on all three sides and has a big coast hence the government will  have to create awareness among fishermen and request them and the manufacturers of fishing nets to see that they meet the stipulated environmental norms. They also have to create widespread awareness by carrying programs in the fishing hamlets and also request others like tourists and other visitors who frequent near the seas not to throw plastics and rubbish in the waters.

A proper system for collection of fishing nets which are damaged should also be there and users should be made accountable for their actions.  Share this message and say no to plastics and save the environment and marine life and encourage other safe methods of fishing which do not take a toll on the environment and marine life and the oceans.
