You Are Special!!!

     Some times we take things for granted in life.  It takes some one who has a different prospective to make you realize those things.  I remember when I was working as a Residential Manager at a group home for the mentally challenged adults.  All of our individuals had some kind of extreme mental health issue that they needed some one to take care of them and they had to be in group homes.  I never realized before I began working there how some people put labels, even make fun of people who have disabilities.  You really don’t realize it until you have to deal with it and see the prejudices and people who make fun of these “special” people with your own eyes.

     I was seeing some one and I was sharing my experiences of how I loved working my job.  Each individual had some type of a personality that would draw you to them.  Their disabilities weren’t an issue, after all they all had feelings just like “normal” people do.  They get their feelings hurt by people who would pick on them.  He told me I was a “special” person who could work with mentally challenged people.  I didn’t consider myself special!!  I asked him what he meant by saying that I was “special?”  He told me that it took a “special” person to work with people with mental issues.  I told him, don’t we all have issue? lol

     I didn’t see those individuals as “special” and I didn’t see myself as “special” for taking care of them.  Every one has problems in their lives and no one is more “special” than anyone else.  We’re all SPECIAL!!  I know what he was meaning, that it took a person with heart to care for some one with “special” needs.  On, that comment I had to agree with him, because I have “heart” for a lot of people!!  Some times though it was/is nice to hear that you are “special.”  Some times we take each other for granted no matter what we do.

     So, here’s a reminder that YOU are SPECIAL!!
