Web Sites You Should Know About

I am not going to discuss Google or Facebook or Twitter, which everyone knows of already.  Further, I have discussed different Search Engines in other articles, gone through the uses/dangers of Facebook, and Twitter? What’s to say About Twitter?

I want to expose other websites, interesting and useful ones that people might not know of.  At the top of the list is something called StumbleUpon.

StumbleUpon calls itself  a ‘discovery engine‘ that finds and recommends various sites to those who use it; Stumblers, in the vernacular.
It invites users to join, select their interests, then go from page to page using the ‘stumble’ button to visit all sorts of different sites, like them, or dislike them, recommend them to their friends, as well as use it for a Networking service.

StumbleUpon was founded in 2002 in Calgary, Canada, but graduate students.

When the software became popular, Silicon Valley took notice and moved the company to San Francisco, in the United States where others invested, primarily those from Name Brand companies.

eBay made an offer that couldn’t be refused in May 2007, but in April 2009 it was repurchased by the origianl owners.

It is an independent startup  with offices in San Francisco and New York City.

With that history out of the way, here is why you want to use it.

Once you join, you see a list of interests.   You put as many or as few checks into the boxes as you please.  This will direct you to pages via the ‘Stumble button’ in the top left hand corner of the page.   You arrive on a page, and can read it, or, if it bores you, Stumble again.   There is no limit on how many pages you can view, and it will show you all different pages, one after another.

When you ‘like’ a page by giving it a thumbs up, it moves up in the Stumble list and more people will see it, if you give it a thumbs down, it will descend.

You have a box so you can send it to places, including Facebook, as well as directly to your friends.   You can post an item to StumbleUpon, such as an article you’ve written or a page you especially liked.

You can spend all day on the site.
