Tips how to reduce Kids Using Computer Gadgets and Smartphone

Are your kids spending too much time playing with computer gadgets and smartphone?

Fear not!

Because you are not alone!

I am facing the same problem with my kids who wouldn’t let go of them , not even for a second!

Children, teens and even adults are being absorb into the apps games, videos and online games that had taken almost 80% of our time in a day.

Noticed that you kids are not talking to you or couldn’t even eat their meals properly?

It is time for us parents to take charge of this situation before it is too late.

Here are the tips how you can reduce your kids using computer gadgets and smartphone which causing any tantrums ( or disagreements)

  1. Fix the time

Set the limit up to 30 minutes per time, 3 times a day should be suffice.

Limit the amount of time to you kids to use the device.

make sure that he abides to the rules, never turn to a soft potato even when he whines, begs you or negotiate with you.

2. Useful reward

Use this computer gadget or smartphone as a reward after he had accomplished the tasks that you had given him to do.

For example: homework ( school work ), household chores, was in good behavior, obedient during the trip to supermarket, finish his meal.

This is to encourage the child to obtain his favorite gadget through things that he had to do which is his responsibilities.

Therefore, he would not take things for granted.

No pain, no gain.

3.  Games and Apps that are Suitable

Always spend some time to check out the apps game that he had downloaded.

If they are violence, non-educational for his age, reason him out and allow him to delete the game by himself.

Look out for educational apps, games that require cognitive skills, mind thinking games such as board games or word puzzle, word search, spelling buzz which could enhance his knowledge and vocabulary.

Limit those archade games.

4. Play Outdoor

Set the same 30 minutes time frame for outdoor activities such as playing on the swing, cycling, football, play catch, swimming which involved physical movements.

Encourage him to play games that are non-gadget to distract him.

Parent and child should play together or do indoor activities for fun instead of leaving him to play by himself.

Painting, handcrafts, baking are some example that we do at home.

5. Change the password

This is the last resort if everything do not work out for you; CHANGE THE PASSWORD!

Of course, he may object, whine, beg, quarrel or even hide the gadget from your sight.

For a teenager, it would be difficult for you to change the password but you could cut off the phone line or change the WIFI password until your teen compromises with your rules.

Make it a habit to change the password whenever he doesn’t listen to you or behave oddly.

Make sure your child ask for the password everytime he needed to access to the gadget or smartphone.

Do not reveal the password to him.

You have to key in the password on your own and remember it .

Don’t put simple password that he can guess.

You can also setup password  him at I Tunes in order to prevent him from downloading app games, music without your knowledge or approval.

Don’t allow computer gadgets or smartphone to take your child away from you.

Don’t allow communication breakdown in your family bonding.

    • Our nephew kids at home are very expert in manipulating their netbook. It's my fault for I bought them netbooks. They seldom read their books. They are ages 4 and 6.They are better than me in playing games on line. I told their mother to convert the minds of the kids to other useful things.Playing games outdoor is a very good recommendation like playing balls.

      • yes, playing outdoor games are far much better tha hooking up to electronic gadgets. You are such a sweet aunt, nobody bought any of these stuff for my kids. Your niece and nephew are so lucky to have you around. Right, age 4 and 6 are quite young but then you can see that even a toddler who had just started to learn how to sit up , is holding a smartphone in hand already, right?

Parents are putting electronic gadgets in charge of a "maid' job , taking care of the kids to make them keep quiet!

        • I agree with you peach, and yes, I love the kids at home. If only your kids are nearer me, I will surely buy them. You are also right about bonding with children outdoor develop more love to their parents.

    • Great tips, especially the points about earning screen time and balancing time on the computer or device with time spent playing outdoors!

      • thanks Kyla.
I had tried out on those tips and yup they worked out well.
Initially, my boy age 9 , isn't co-operative at all.
I had to change the password to make him listen.
Finally he had sat down, had a serious talk with me! I thought it should be the other way round!
Anyway, he agreed that no playing smartphone apps game when doing his homework, having meals.
Sometimes, he is BORED with these gadgets and kept pulling me out of here ( LiteraacyBase ) to play kicking ball in order to sweat out!

        • HAHA, it is funny when kids make us get a dose of our own "medicine". My son would also get annoyed when he sees I am still trying to keep working if it's my turn minding him after the nanny left. Maybe it is his way of telling me that I should focus on him instead, LOL!

    • Good tips all around and I am for kids going outside and playing something. On rainy days when around teens and tweens let them have their technology with the kids around me it is much quieter with the technology. I was a kid of seventies and eighties and that is what we did for the hand-held games were just starting then.

      • yes mark, during rainy days, there isn't any way to get wet and have fun.
Might as well to keep the teens and kiddos quiet with the gadget for a while.

We do have board games, watching TV or painting together.
Ever noticed that kids do not like to do these stuff on their own?
They want us parents to participate too!
I had realized that we too need to take a break from laptop, smartphone, computer even when we are earning money.

    • You had mentioned a very useful tips in dealing with addiction to computer games. It becomes a widespread problem in parenting. If we impose these tips, open communication will be great to let the children understand why it needs to set limitations to their life.

      • you are right shvkat!
We need to educate our kids that screentime is compulsory rule for them and for us too.
A time to take a break for their eyes to take a rest.
A time for the body to move about rather than sitting like a couch potato.
Obesity and overweight issues are on the rise.
Kids rude behavior during meal time and when adults talking to them are unacceptable.
Time to let technology to stop for a second before it is too late

        • Nowadays, children are too complicated to deal with as compared to the old days. Of course, we cannot bring back the old school treatment for the children. It is not suitable and it will not also work for them. In times, parents need to adjust and find ways to discipline the children.

    • It is just not kids. See me!! All my spare time I spend here. I must make use of some of your tips for myself (lol)

      • lol bestwriter!
You got it right, hit on the nail itself!
yeah I agree that we as parents are addicted to laptop and gadgets too.
Not for fun but for money making purpose.

hence, we too need to take a break every 1 hour or 2 hour to perform other tasks as well.

        I had noticed that too.

    • Excessive usage of technology by kids is indeed a cause of concern. You have shared some great tips here. I wish I could use it with my son but he 's a grown up now and I can't really be strict with him.

    • Although I feel like gadgets can be useful in some ways, it's gotten to a point where most kids know how to play temple run rather than dishes. What's happening, kids should play outside and have fun at parks.

    • @Kayla, kids are now getting wiser in gadget manipulation. My niece at age 2 knows how to operate their TV and knows how to text her dad and mum. She keeps on calling them too. I never had experienced what my niece experiences this time.

    • This topic is a concern for more than just kids as we all know too well. I know people of age 30, 40 and older that can't hardly eat or have a conversation without trying to sneak a peak for that one more text etc. Excellent article!

    • Truly I think kids ar3 turning everything around to suit there needs and that's dangerous if anything kids should not even be given access to this gadgets when they are still in school because that just corrupts their minds, and that are not able to concentrate on their studies. The above tips could work out but remember there are kids who's tantrums cannot be eased easily until they get what they want. So I think the best way is not to let them have access to this things until they ar3 old enough so that they do u get hooked
