Seniors I notice have assumed that working on computers is only for youngsters. I proved it otherwise. Spending a bit of time to get myself acquainted with it was all that was need for me to start with. I got the hang of it bit by bit and i can now confidently say for me a computer is like a paper tiger.
I created a Facebook Group with great enthusiasm to get together ex employees of the Company I was working for. A photo posted by another ex colleague prompted me to open that Group. I did not realise however that there are not many on Facebook who would join there.
We are all seniors now and not many seniors are computer savvy. Some have not joined FaceBook, although they do have some basic knowledge about computers. I experience this all the time.
After giving up my job midstream I joined computer classes and did a few courses of those times such basic, DBase, Lotus, Excel and so on which as we all know are of no use now as Windows has taken over which is user friendly. I had to get help from someone to learn this.
Then came the Internet. I did not give up,. Earlier it was very basic where we had issues to deal with every step of the way. This again has become easy now. Internet and yours truly are now inseparable.
Sadly, however, seniors of my time just do not want to go anywhere near computers as they find them intimidating which is not true.
I face the same situation when it comes to writing sites. There is not a single person of my age group who is in my real life who has joined any of these sites.
My virtual world therefore consists of those who share my interest and not necessarily those who I know in the real world. Life has to move on but there is nothing I can do about it. If they want me in their life all those in my real world should learn to work on computers.
Now with the Indian Government trying to digitise and create cashless transactions, this will atleast make these seniors realise the importance to get into the world of technology.
Handling finances this way could put a fear in the minds of those who are new to technology as to the correctness of handling this activity but sooner or later they will have to plunge in and take courage to become techie savvy.
It is not just seniors even those illiterates would be forced into this activity as sooner or later India expects to go cashless. This way it expects to eradicate black money and how successful it will be only time will tell
It is indeed a huge activity in that we need to have the infrastructure be it bigger time servers, more staff in the banks, more swipe machines, at every nook and corner. While in cities this could be within reach it is a nightmare to think that rural areas would embrace this system without having to exclude several who will not able to get in.
