THE VERY AGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

We are in the age of communication and we dare you to escape it. It will engulf you all your life and be with you everywhere, anywhere, at any time, through everything you do.

According to Marshall McLuhan –who prophesied that printed books would become obsolete, killed off by television and other electronic information technology- all parts of you will evolve to measure up to this new age of communication and you won’t be able to escape it. You will be made very transparent by it, almost really naked, and you can’t hide from it. It will haunt you wherever you go, even in the high heavens.

The communication centers of the world are in your body. Your eyes, ears, nose, skin, and mouth are your communication centers. In addition, your mind is the center of what is communicated to you through these mediums.

You cannot hide anymore. You can’t be alone anymore. The television, cell phones, telephones, radios, satellites, the internet, webcams, iPods, and whatever gadgets you have.

All these bring us to our leaders who can’t hide much from the public even if they try. One can access their hidden wealth, their visible mistresses, and even their hideouts. They become naked to the public.

This is a bad age for politicians or government officials but a good age for the constituent or the people. One can see a leader through and through, exposed for the entire world to see. Everyone now is vulnerable, that everyone now must be careful about his or her transparencies.

The public comes to learn, for example, about a government official’s wife who loves the casino or plays mahjong all day.

So it is wise to be careful in this age of communication. It can be very useful but it also can be very harmful. It is kind of a policeman to those who think they can keep their lives secret but who constantly fear that one day, all those secrets will be exposed or revealed and bite their behinds.

Then again, you could choose to be happy reading the most beautiful book in your life- escaping from this noisy world of communication and dreaming with your eyes open of the fairy tale life you want. Dreaming is free. JJ

    • Yes, I like the social media. I have the most fun writing and sharing articles with friends and family. I,also, like it because you can locate long, lost families. This article is an eyeopener and helps you count the cost of the social media--Good or bad. Maybe, it is a good thing to take a break and read a good book. Good idea!
