This is another proof of the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ as a human being and having His Humanity as part of His other nature. It is written that our Lord Jesus Christ has assumed the form of us human beings and shares our very humanity except that He is free from sin.
There is always this thirst and hunger in our heart and in our mind as human being that we are constantly looking and searching on how to quench our physical thirst.
But more than our physical thirst is the spiritual thirst that our soul experience—to reach out and cling to something that is more than the physical or material things in life but to something that is metaphysical and eternal.
We recall the scene about the Samaritan woman at the well where our Lord Jesus Christ has said that whoever that drink water from this well will be thirsty again, but whoever that will drink from the water that our Lord Jesus Christ will give to him will never be thirsty again because the water that He will give will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
It has been said that our Lord Jesus Christ is not really physically thirsty but He is thirsty for our love, for our time, for our attention for Him and our fellow men.
How Does It Feel To Be Thirsty?
How many times have you felt thirsty in your life? But more than the physical thirst, how many time you have felt the spiritual thirst in your life. If we are thirsty then we drink water right in order to quench our physical thirst.
And if we are spiritually thirsty then we drink the spiritual water that comes along from the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ together with the Holy Spirit.
Does our mother, father, brother, sister, wife, children, friends and neighbor, workmates and other people thirst for our love, thirst for our care and concern and thirst for our time?
If they are we need to quench their thirst.
There are so many reference and mentioned of waters in the Holy Scriptures as describing some deeper spiritual truths that we need to learn and experienced for our self in this life.
Sometimes we feel that this world is like a barren dessert or as used in one of the prayers a “vale of tears”. But even in the dessert sometimes there is this oasis of water that could quench anyone’s thirst.
Imagine that you are travelling in the middle of the dessert for quite a few days with all the scorching heat of the sun and the dessert and all of a sudden you find an oasis. What a great relief it could be!
Water is life so the saying goes. Yes water could be the source and fountain of life.
Yes we need to drink from the water that our Lord Jesus Christ is giving to us so that one day it will become a spring of water welling up to eternal life in us. Amen.
