The Difference between Shards and Rewriting

Imagine that a few years ago you wrote a 2,400 word treatise on the Queen of France.    It is full of authorities, links, in fact, it could be a college paper.

The item was published on a site which was very demanding.  Today you are on a site that takes shorter items; i.e. 500 words.

Now, the honest writer would reread the article,  and break it into segments.   Each could stand alone.  Each segment is written to be complete in itself.

The first might be a new item saying; “The Rise and Fall of Marie Antoinette”  in which certain points are made but not backed up.

The second article would cover her early days, just before her marriage, the third would start with her marriage and the changes in her life when going to the French Court.   The Fourth would go through events during her time on the throne, and the Fifth would end with her beheading.

Each item takes facts from the previous article, because facts can’t change, (despite the belief of Trump and his lackeys).    You can’t change a date, you can’t touch an event.  You might be able to show the significance of a date or explain the event in more detail, but there is no way you can depart from ‘canon’.

These are not ‘shards’.

The dishonest writer will copy the item to notepad, do a word count and stop at each 500 word point.

The article is in the same voice, same words and can not really stand alone.   Maybe a few adjectives and repetitions are shoved in so that out of 2,400 words each item has about 480 of the original. and stuffed in words to get it to 500.

But it is the same item.

Hence if you are going to republish an item already published rewrite it.  Really.

    • It's obvious that it is just being rewritten. She just chopped it into sections.

It can still be detected as plagiarized.

      • It was. I tried to warn the Mod, he ignored me. It brought the entire site down. There are many topics one will write and write about again because they get stuck in your mind. But one has to write from different angles.

On Wikinut I had written about the Bubonic Plague... and another writer had written about the Plague at virtually the Same Time!

I thought he Plagarised my work until I read his....

The joke was... the BBC had mentioned the Plague, I ran to do my research, he ran to do his. We both published at virtually the same time... two totally different items from different points of view.
