The All Purpose Internet

Years ago, the average person had a radio, to listen to music, sports, the news.

The average person had devices to record music, or play music,  as tape recorders or cassette players.

The average person also had a television to watch programs, instead of just listen.   Many connected DVDs to the television to watch movies and programs they wished to view.

There were also telephones and cell phones.

Computers were good to calculate and play games and one could connect them to the television to see the games on a larger screen.

Walking into the average living room revealed a number of electronic gadgets;  a radio over there, a television set over here, a DVD player (and or ‘game boy’) connected to the television,  a telephone over there, and a computer on the desk over here.

Now, all you need is wi-fi.

All you need is a computer connected to the Internet.  You can watch episode after episode of television programs, get the latest news, hear music, watch movies, interviews, play games, communicate with others.

One device, replacing so many, and replacing them in a most enticing manner.

I can see any television program I desire.  I can watch as many episodes as I want.   I can see movies.  Concerts.

I can play games, get the latest news.  I can read and write and virtually, I don’t need anything else, (except a coffee percolator)

When looks at how many years radio dominated, then to be in contention with television.

When one sees how long it took for record players to get into homes, for vinyl to be replaced by cassettes and to note that it was only about a quarter of a century that computers have invaded our homes and taken over.

    • I agree with you totaly the gadget called a computer is one powerful gadget. When I look back in the days life, in those times having a television was not a luxury like it is now, it was a necessity in fact of you had a small tv we used to call it a great walk which was only in black and white you were a rich person. Hahaha life is very interesting. Let me correct you a bit before the DVD came about we had the VCD which stands for video compact disc, we have truly come from far. Now you can't even use those machines because the cds now can't play on them. We now have the computers and the televisions where you can choose from either to play whatever you want.

      • Yes! I forgot about the VCR... yes! Oh gosh...

Ya know I sit here, watch television programs, read the news, do my work, and when I go out... it's like I'm leaving part of my body behind.

    • I agree with you. The computer and its internet access is now an almighty weapon of entertainment, espionage, calculations, banking and even working at home. The only problem that I hate to mention here is all the jobs that were probably lost at the factories that were manufacturing the good old fashioned radios, telephones etc. But progress cannot be halted and certainly not stopped as they are coming up with more and more amazing technology.

      • It is kind of good in a way that a person has just a laptop and can connect to the Net, and in one package have a tv, a radio, etc. But I'm sure there are those who will still buy a TV or a Radio. Prob. not as many.

But if you only have X dollars then you buy one thing...

    • If I remember exactly the Computer has dominated the entire scene of VCR, Recorder, Calculator, Radio etc., from 1990. In my office, people were asking me whether it is possible to see the file written by an officer sitting in his chamber.I was telling them that this programme is already there in U.S but not in India. I was telling them it needs a lot of expenditure. Having a memory of 500MB was seen as great. The RAM was considerably low . Even then we were anxious to run PLSQL on it and it was taking a lot of time . Now everything is changed.

    • Internet has changed lots of things. Now it is an important thing for everyone's life. Without it many of us can't spend time for sure. Not only for entertainment now it is getting connected with work and other things too. Like now we can do much more using it like paying bills, recharges, banking and many more. Now it is surely hard to survive without it. Personally my whole work is related to internet as I am website developer. So for me it is much more important.

      • Like you I pay bills on line, write online, watch t.v. on line, keep up with my friends online... research and do my work online...

    • The average person is connected to the internet to the same degree that an American president was during the yesteryears. Most of the most sought after and searched internet sites have to do with online earning opportunities, weight loss, as well as cheek in the tongue, pornography among others. In fact, the world is a global village as a result of internet connectivity and hundreds of thousands of search results are available at the touch of a button. Apps are also being developed with the capacity to run sophisticated programs and operations in industries. The possibilities are endless.

    • Seems like the television was a hit only yesterday. But then, like you say everything changes so fast that time seems to be in a mighty hurry.Soon the internet will be replaced by something new I guess.

      • With TV you have to wait for you show to come on. You have to watch it when it airs, put up with the commercials... online?
