Terrace Garden

With a view to cooling our lounge area downstairs we decided to have a garden on our terrace.

Before laying the lawn we made it waterproof by placing a thick rexin sheet and boxed it up with bricks all round. For better drainage bits of handmade bricks and sand was spread all over the rexin sheet. A four inch layer of good soil was then spread and the lawn was planted. We planted this lawn way back, almost 20 years ago but did not have the need to replant as what we did was to rake it and enrich the soil.  We chose Bermuda Grass as this does not grow tall and hence does away with mowign.

The only issue was the weed problem. Weeds can only be eradicated by manually removing them. It took us years to get rid of all the weeds and this function proved to be very expensive as we need to engage labour for this job.

Today I can proudly say we have a lawn that is the neighbor’s envy and owner’s pride.

Watering is done twice a week and enriching it is done once every year. We have our own compost that we use for this purpose. We have compost pits where wet garbage is stored and soil spread over it once a week. In a year’s time the compost is ready for use.

We also have a few roses on the terrace which need a lot of attention.

We have a few colors but they are quite moody and do not yield the way we want them to.

Walking barefoot on lawn grass has a few health advantages. It is also said that the color green is good for the eyes.

We have a beautiful view from the terrace specially a view of the rising sun

Walking up to the terrace several times in the day I consider to be a good walking exercise

Thanks to the terrace garden our area downstairs is cool and inviting.
