Staying Comfortable In The Heat

~I was going to use the title “Staying Cool In The Heat”  but I don’t think you can really stay “cool” in the heat!! lol~

Of course the first and probably best suggestion is NOT to be outside in the heat!!  However, that may not always be possible.  If you are out in the heat, drink plenty of water!!  Also wear light colored clothing.  I learned this especially when I was a flagger for a construction company standing on 100+ degree asphalt. I had to get new t-shirts that were light colored, because the darker colors reflect more heat.

Other things to keep you cool if you have to be outside in the heat that I have used to endure the heat is try to do whatever you need to do in the heat before noon or even 3 p.m.  Now, of course if you have a job, you’re outside past during those times.  When I worked as a flagger I hat a hat (company hat) and I sewed some nylon mesh on the back of the hat.  I would make sure the mesh was wet at all times.  Also tried to keep my hat wet at all times as well.  It seemed like a wet bandanna around my neck also helped.

Of course being out in the sun, wear sunscreen that has protection for both  UVB and UVA.  It used to be you needed the highest SPF, now that isn’t necessarily true anymore.  So again it is recommended to read the ingredients.  You also must reapply it several times as you will sweat and the sunscreen will be needed to be applied again.

I can’t stress enough though the importance of drinking plenty of water!!  Water is the best for you, even though there are some drinks out there that are good too, one can NEVER get enough of  water!!   Water will keep you dehydrated as sweating takes away minerals and water out of your body.  So, if you’re NOT sweating out in the heat, you might still  need to drink plenty of water.

If you should suffer from heat stroke you definitely need water.  I have found that getting in the shower with your clothes on and standing under water as cold as you can stand helps.  Some people may think this is “weird” but it only makes sense.  When you get heat stroke, you should shower with as cold of water as possible to cool down.  This way when you get your clothes wet as well, you will stay cooler longer.  With your clothes wet, sit in front of a fan and drink water!!

Hopefully with these hints, if you have to be out in the heat these tips will help you!!

    • @joDee Stout What we experience here is not extreme heat and even then all the tips that you have suggested could be useful. Yes. Of the tips drinking water could top the list.

    • Drinking a sports drink (homemade or commercial) is also a good idea if you've become dehydrated and are feeling poorly. The special balance of sugar and salt - and of sodium to potassium in a commercial sports drink - helps to get the fluids back into your body more quickly and to rebalance your electrolytes.

    • It is not applicable to stay under the sun while sunbathing. It may result to skin carcinoma. However, we cannot refrain from being out under the heat of the sun. As you had mentioned, we need to hydrate ourselves by drinking water, use lotion with high SPF, wear a hat or even use an umbrella.

Since I am living on the tropical island of the Philippines. We usually need to stay in the shade as much as possible. However, this is in the case if living in the lowland areas. I am lucky that I live in the mountainside of my country. The cool weather is all the year round.
