SOMETIMES IT PAYS A BRAG

SOMETIMES IT PAYS A BRAG

No one likes a show-off but almost everyone likes to show off, at least a little. However, when we deliberately talk about our accomplishments in our workplace, we run the risk of looking a bit conceited. In addition, in every workplace, we are expected to be modest at all times.

In all honesty, employees hanker for attention from their employers. It gives great satisfaction, deserving a mental pat on the back when our bosses notice and acknowledge our efforts.

But what if modesty does not get us anywhere at work? What if being a silent operator does not catch the attention of our supervisor and does not leave a good impression on us?

In some offices, some superiors listen to what others say of other people since they do not have time to observe their people. Ergo, they would ask for the impressions of individuals, who they think are reliable, about the professional characteristics and work ethics of their coworkers. The downside in this setup is when that person whom everyone thinks to be reliable is not dependable at all. That individual may not be aware of the things we do in the office- being punctual and working steadfastly. A little bragging and talking about what we do in our job is sometimes necessary, which might help in stamping a good impression towards our workmates and hopefully relayed to our superiors.

The sad truth about not being noticed by our boss is that it affects how we feel and think about ourselves. It makes us contemplate that maybe we are not working hard enough to be noticed by our superiors. Worse is when our boss thinks negatively of us, which may lead to demotion or maybe being transferred to another work place. Such consequences are acceptable if we deserve them, but are self- depreciating.

Leaving a good impression is imperative to thrive in the workplace. However, if our hard work and effort are not acknowledged, then it leaves no room for making a good impression at all. So, must we always take the “let the others do the bragging for you” stance? Sometimes it is okay to brag as long as we do not hurt anyone and don’t sound arrogant.
