Some Superstitious Beliefs In Philippines That Seem Like Funny And Crazy

Superstition has become part of a country’s tradition and culture. Superstition is always a ride on to whatever activities done and the feeling is like having accomplished a task that promotes safety and assurance that nothing bad follows after having spoken some words to get rid of bad spell and body harm. It is a belief that bad spirits and fallen angels dwell in a certain place that seems remote and abandoned and even not as long as ambiance looks weary and weird. It seems rooted in a country and continuously passes generation to generation. There is a particular instance that twists some beliefs down to its tarmac and buried to its origin after technology swiped almost all superstition for proofs of their nonexistent perversely presented in video and YouTube thus promoting impact to human lives including their beliefs that slowly decline and gradually dies.

In the past, the great grandparents showed and promoted their superstition and had continuously enjoined them in their daily lives. Though some superstitious beliefs in Philippines are fading in the busiest cities but others still exist in some remote places. Technology spreads like wild fire so the younger generations are mostly the changed- career in a particular community, thereby, enhancing the changes towards realities. There are beliefs that are universally true with strong basis and that is the words of God written in the Holy Bible. Those superstitious believers may have their physical health affected because psychologically they believe a fairy, a bad spirit or a monster had been hit while passing a place and without saying the word “excuse me.” That makes is funny now because of such superstition the health is affected and the blame falls to self and to those invisible. These are among the superstitious beliefs in Philippines:

To say excuse me when passing a certain place first time. This means to say that the person has a belief that someone invisible and powerful could have dwelt on that certain place, so it is must to say excuse me or else something malicious would happen. There are those psychologically affected if not say those words excuse me, and when arrived home sickness attacked like fever or stomach ache. The first thing the family members asked would be where the person passed and the siblings would proceed asking if the person said excuse me, if not, they would surely tell him a fairy was hit along the way and his sickness served as punishment. OMG. It sounds weird, but no one has guts to say that anyone could have a stomach ache or fever while staying at home for virus does not spare anyone. Contamination happens if body is not strong or immune system is weak. Of course, the old folks will consistently believe the superstition and no matter how you tell them science related cause, they would still argue you and instead of bringing the patient to doctor, to a quack doctor; hence, the patient dies due to dehydration.

It is very hard to explain the manner how they served foods to those called “anitos” to convince them to pardon the patient so sickness disappears, but if sickness reaches to the extreme pain, the parents would tell their son has hit an “anitos” child while sitting and rage of the “anitos” parents at the extreme that their son cannot be granted a pardon, but death to their son. That sounds weird. Actually, this happened to a remote place in our city when I was a child and my parents told us his children to pray always to God and believe no other but God to be safe all the time. That is why every time a family member is sick; our father brought the sick child to the doctor not to a quack doctor. My father is a religious and God-fearing man and worked as an official in the military and only be with his family very once a week. That is one reason why our parents taught us to pray and east only healthy foods. We are also told not to eat candies to have healthy teeth and not to chew bubble gum to avoid swallowing it that may cause harm to the intestine.

Another superstition is not to comb the hair at night. It said that if comb a hair at night something bad happen to a family member. In short someone dies if do the combing of hair at night. When comb a hair, there is a hair strand that falls to mean life ends, OMG. So no one dares comb a hair in the evening, but after so many years and after technology is introduced to the world that superstition faded. Different shampoos are endorsed in TV and young people keep on combing their hair day and night and many young people take a bath any time in the evening; after which, combing the hair follows. From that time on, others follow and gone is the fear of losing a family member if comb a hair at night. Actually in my case, I haven’t combed my artificial curly hair for many years now hehehehe. It is because after shampooing my hair, I put some hair conditioner diluted with water and retained it there on my hair, so no more combing using a comb, I just com using my fingers, LOL, funny but true.

Another superstition is not to sweep the floor in the evening. When sweep the floor in the evening, you are cursing the family member. The curse may lead to loss of lives to family members. You may be allowed to sweep the floor not with a broom, but a rag. This sounds weird, but this is superstition that seems like crazy yet for those who truly believe, it is up to them, anyway what they believe is not a crime. This is better than taking and pushing illegal and deadly drugs. Sometimes this superstition makes those lazy happy for they can escape some chores they hate to do. The next day expect your home if plenty of garbage in the evening a messy one. There are other superstitious beliefs in our place and the aftermath of them follows the same with those mention to bring bad luck and bad health like not to throw a garbage anywhere for you might hit a bad spirit, not to tune in a sound when the family is mourning .

When I was in New Zealand, I discovered a superstition there. I thought they do not have it. The superstitious belief is not to open an umbrella inside home because it brings or means bad luck to the family members, OMG. I was in deep thought about this bad luck, so weird too. I think superstition varies country to country.

    • Superstition varies country to country.I think even a superior country like America people also have superstition. Superstition dwells to man because others had met something bad as coincidence to the belief, that is why it may not fade as years go by.In the country of my birth, there are so many superstitious beliefs that mostly guide people to do right acts, but in reverse to the real world for they do not follow like excuse me. They are afraid of the none existent rather than to those humans alive and existing. If a person says excuse me to a fictitious existence of a bad spirit why can't others say excuse me to the living humans? Maybe they are not afraid, they are only afraid to those having imaginative powers.

    • As time goes on, new generations do not believe or practice those superstitious beliefs. But in some areas, there are still a lot of it. Sometimes I observe it sometimes not. It is interesting to know they have the same one in New Zealand!

    • My 4 sister and I grew up not believing any of the superstitious beliefs. My father being a lawyer then would always refute any belief that we would say is being believed by old people.

My mother would believe some but as always would be told by my father that they have no scientific basis.

So far, we all grew up well, even if we didn't believe any of the superstitious beliefs.

    • @acelawrites, that is true I cannot believe that people in New Zealand and Australia also have their own superstition, that is why I felt like contaminated fr when i reached home from the visit of that country and see my sister opening an umbrella I told her no, for it hives bad luck my sister too was afraid to do so heheeh. I was contaminated anyway there is no harm if believe or not we stay the same.

My cousin in America also told me that there are many superstitions in America hahahaha, I thought only third world countries superstitious believers so with superior countries, so funny but the reality that humans are the same both parts in the body.We matter only in our beliefs, customs and traditions and politics and ways of life.

    • @Dina, that is always how life goes when our father is a lawyer. My father was a retired military official and was always assigned in remote and weird places even entered a cave to rest with his men and nothing had been observed. Superstition is just a matter of thinking because a person believes in it and afraid of it though in reality there is no negative effect in their lives. Somehow we cannot also believe those believers for they lack education and orientation and strong beliefs of God, Those who are close to God as being religious are not easily be affected with their surrounding for God is their instrument against all evils and odd .

    • Superstition continues to exists as long as there are believers and culture correlates with it. Well anyway, this is better than committing a crime. This kind brings people in unison and bond.
