Site Killer; a True Story

There are people who know how to ‘play’ a site.   They find out how and what and when and who before they join. They research how to get the most ‘points’; be it getting on the Front Page, getting the most money, becoming a ‘top writer’, whatever is the ‘get’ they know about it before the first key stroke.

Some, as the 2010 batch of Hubpage killers knew exactly how to score full ‘marks’ get on the front page, and get all the views possible.

They were ‘crap writers’, people who used one thousand words to say nothing.

This is an example of crap writing;

“Right now, everyone is talking about chicken lips.   You can’t go to the corner and not hear about chicken lips. The Internet is buzzing about chicken lips.   You probably are interested in chicken lips.   You may have hear a number of things about chicken lips.   You may believe or not believe what you have heard about chicken lips.”

On and on and on about chicken lips.   If you wade through the 1000 words you won’t know any more about chicken lips then if you didn’t read the item at all.

The article gets millions of hits because of the repetition of the words ‘chicken lips’.   Any one who entered that term would have, (pre-Panda) been directed to the page.

Tomorrow, virtually the same article appears only chicken lips is changed to lizard ears.

The writer, or more properly ‘crap writer’ makes the bag, gets on the front page, publishing rubbish day after day and getting hits, more hits than you can dream of, because the crap writer knows how to play SEO search terms, keywords and every search engine available.

That is, until the Panda slapped down various writing sites, primarily Hubpages, which went from twelve million hits a month to six, to three, and now, about five hundred thousand.

The Panda is the name of an algorithm that was introduced by Google as an anti-writing site weapon.   All writing sites that it didn’t like, (which was all writing sites it knew about) would start with a ‘minus’ score.

By this I mean; if you entered a search term; such as chicken lips, where previous to the introduction of the Panda, you’d go to that crap writer’s item on Hubpages, the day after the introduction, everything on Hubpages starts with a minus score.

Where before the Hubpages site would get 100% as it had all the words, the day after, it would be way down at the bottom of a Google, and everything with ‘chicken’ or ‘lips’ would come before it, although it has all the words.

It wasn’t only Hubpages, Triond, Bukisa, all the famous names started with minus scores.

The story I am about to tell comes after the Panda.  After the crap writers were routed.   This site killer played the mods.

She joined a site an contacted one of the Mods telling him that she was suffering from a deadly disease and wanted to participate and wondered if she could repost items she had posted elsewhere on the site.

The Mod explained, as expected, about removing them from the other site and posting them here.

She said she needed his help and wanted him to monitor her actions because of her deadly disease.  He told her when he was on deck, and that is when she posted.

She learned the site took items of 500 words.   She went to her old items which were 2,500 words, (having been published on a site that had collapsed).

She would chop her item into five articles, and publish them one after another and because the site demanded five links, five photos, five bold, she would insure that she met the ‘Star Page’ criterion, and her pet mod would see that she got the Star and was on the front page.

Her writing was nothing quotable.  It was grammatically correct, the spelling was fine, but the items were clearly shards.   She would write, “Comedy Programs of the 1950s” and when she hit 500 words stop.  There was no closing statement.   She’d post again, same title, do the same thing, only there would be no opening sentence, no closing sentence.

Her five shards would be back to back on the front page, making her seem to be the Top Writer!  After all, look at all the stuff she has on the Front Page!

But her stuff was trash, and anyone who read half an item she posted, would spit, leave the site and assume everything on it was trash.

The Mod was warned by users, but because his beloved was dying of a disease, felt he was doing a public service.

As anyone can tell you, the front page of a site is the most important page.   It displays the best writing and it is what entices readers.    If one hits the front page and sees rubbish, they leave.  If one starts to read what they think is a good item and it is a shard, they leave.

So the site stopped paying because the hits went into the toilet.

The point of a Mod is not to play with a user, not to pick favourites, not to push up their friends and push down those they don’t like, but to make sure the best writing is on the Front Page.

Mods are to police the front page more than the back, more than the daily posts of users, because people who come on to the site will see the front page, will assume that this is the best the site has to offer.   When viewers see rubbish on the front page, they assume that the rest of the writing is even worse, and run.

The ‘dying’ user left as soon as the site stopped paying, and went on to another to play the Mod there with the same old ‘dying’ story.

Why did she do the dying thing?  To play the Mod.

She knew she was posting shards of not particularly good items, and knew that if all things were equal she’d be on the back page.   By making it ‘personal’ and finding a Mod dumb enough to fall for her scam, she insured the front page, insured hits, insured cash.  That it damaged the site was a laugh.

She has gone from site to site with her ‘dying’ story, leaving destruction in her wake, but cashing out each month until the site stops paying.

    • A site dies because of users. They play games, cheat spam and help Google to cancel the sites adsense account.
It is important for site owners to keep a vigil on such activities and if they do not do it then they will be out.
