ROLE OF DIET AND NUTRITION IN DENTAL CARIES

Your diet and nutrition not only affects your physical growth and development but they also have a strong effect on your oral health. The health status of our oral cavity is directly related to the type of food we eat. They play a major role in tooth development, gum health, strength of the alveolar bone and onset of other oral diseases.

The major food elements that contribute to oral health are proteins, vitamin A, vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus, ascorbic acid, fluoride, iodine and iron.

Dental caries is a common type of oral ailment. Its onset is not only dependant on our oral hygiene but also on the type of food we eat. Malnutrition or deficiency of some particular food indegrient leads to their rapid onset.
The food we eat can be divided into two forms-
1. Cariostatic which prevent spread of caries because they cannot be metabolized by micro organisms in mouth.
2. Cariogenic foods-these are foods that contain fermentable carbohydrates that are easily broken down and cause demineralization of tooth.
The common example of cariogenic foods are chips, cereals, breads, fruits, sugars, sweets and deserts.
Common cariostatic foods are protein foods, eggs, fish, meat, and poultry, most of the vegetables, fats and sugarless gums.
There is some food substances called as anticariogenic foods. These foods when eaten first prevent plaque from recognizing an acidogenic food. They tend to increase salivation and at the same time have some antimicrobial activity. The most common example is xylitol (sugar substitute) and cheese.
Though proper dental hygiene with use of toothbrush and mouthwashes has no substitute in maintenance of oral hygiene, control and monitoring the food we eat can go a long way in preventing dental caries. Nothing is as good as your natural tooth and so it is wise to take adequate measures to maintain oral hygiene.
It is not mandatory to follow any strict diet made up of only cariostatic food but a balanced diet is always the best resort.
