Reasons Parents Send Children For Tuition

Do you know that nowadays, tuition centres

are mushrooming in the heart of the city and

 residential areas?

These educational centres are earning huge

profits with lots of gimmick to trick parents

and students into enrolling the package or

courses to aid their children in improving the

 weak subjects.

An average parent has to fork out $60 to

$100 per subject for each child.

Normally, each child will take up at least 2

subject and the most are 6 subjects from

 different tuition centres.

Parents are willing to fetch their kids to and

fro different tuition centres of different

residential areas as long as they can see

their kids have improving results in the

 exam papers.

Today, even the teachers are giving home

tuition or work at tuition centres after

 school hours.

They are earning more than a double of

their present full-time salary at school.

Question is:

Are the teachers shirking their

responsibilities ?

Are the parents being KIASU?

( Kiasu is the Hokkien dialect meaning

 afraid to lose out )

Reasons to have tuition:

1. Not enough time-

In school, a teacher has the limited time of

45minutes to teach each subject for

30-50 students in a classroom.

Over here in Malaysia, each day, there are

10 lessons to teach per day, some subjects

may take up to 2 lessons such as English,

 Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese language.

The time slot for main subjects are adequate

but not for the least important subjects.

Hence, this poses a disadvantage to students

with lack understanding for those subjects

that they are weak in.

The teacher does not have sufficient time

to explain every single student clearly on

the syllabus and pay attention to the weak

students.

It takes up more time and slow down in

covering up the required syllabus for the day.

2. Unable to catch up with other student

Most weak students have problems in

understanding Mathematics and Science as

these subjects require quick thinking, good

memory to memorize the formulas and

techniques in calculation, scientific names

and the workout.

If each classroom consists of 50 students, a

teacher has a hard time to teach the weak

students in understanding the concept

because teaching one to one will take up

time and keep the other bright student

waiting, causing chaos and chattering instead

 of learning.

Hence, the weak students will definitely

copy answers from classmates and never

take the opportunity to understand the

workout of the answers either.

3. The KIASU parents-

Nowadays parents are willing to spend huge money on

tuition fees for several reasons.

# Cope with the weak subjects-

  • put his child into a tuition centre with smaller number

of students, receiving personal attention from the

part-time teacher (whether or not certified ).

  •  Tuition centre are good at targeting the

student weak points, giving short cut tips

and quick notes to gain better understanding

of the weak subjects.

  • A parent cannot accept his child

remarked at the weakest student in a class.

  • It is embarrassing moment for the

parents to meet the teacher during PTA and

refused to accept teacher advices.

# Compete with each other-

  • Students are competing with each other not to

improve themselves but to attain their parents trust, labeled

as a teacher pet and a parent apple eye.

  • Nowadays students are very sly, they

could negotiate with their parents to achieve

their goals.

  • In order for the parents to buy

something that a child wanted, he will

promise to achieve the position of top 5 best

student for the deal.

  • Hence, the parents have the chance to

boast around with friends of his child

achievements, whether or not his child did

his best in studying or cheated in

examination hall.

Are you sending our child to tuition centre?

How many subjects is he studying for

tuitions?

How much money are you paying per month for the tuition fees?

P.S:

I have not send my son to any tuition yet.

He is currently in Year 1, although his

classmates are spending more time in tuition

centres than at home.

I teach him at home with lots of revision

and homework.

    • You took the picture on your children 's exercise books? How old is he/she?

My daughter is Standard One. I don't send her to any tuition center as the homework already taken some many time from her leisure time after school.

She did complain on not enough leisure time which she loves to read stories books.
She did read the whole day before she entered the primary school when she was 5 or 6 years old.

For your knowledge, she didn't go to nursery or kinde, she stayed at home and read the stories books by her own and learnt from reading.

Moreover, I prefer she allocates some time for cycling, playing games rather than sitting in the tuition center as she already sit for 5 hours continuously in the school.

For alternative, we sent her to a small size primary school which only 10+ students in a class, I believe the teachers able to teach the student in the small size group.

She did it! She managed to score the second position in the mid year examination earlier.

    • If it's a cheat or a scam and it's being allowed then shame on the scammers and cheaters, shame on the people “in charge” who are allowing it to happen. Any country that does not want to ensure that its citizens receive a proper education is just bringing down the whole country! The minds of the citizens of a country are the country's best natural resource and best defense against aggressors and oppressors, i.e. countries coming in and taking over! I don't know why every nation doesn't get that!

    • I remember during my school days we had tuition that was being run by individuals in their homes, and that was very convenient for most kids who wanted more tutoring in certain subjects, probably those that they are weak at. I like the idea of tuition because it gets kids to be at a very good standing in class. I think it's a good idea for tuition to be introduced in school

    • @peachpurple Here in India coaching institutes are rampant everywhere. They have a licence shamefully. The reasons given by you seem to justify but a bonding with a parent and child is grossly missing. No matter what a parent should spend time with their child atleast to follow up on what the child is doing in school and monitor their time at home. Sadly this approach is totally missing. It is too late now to change anything as these institutions are so tempting that even parents want them to exist.

    • You mean tuition to tutor, this is what I understand from your post. If a parent can afford to have tutor for their child, I see nothing wrong with it for the the benefit of the child. But when a parent cannot afford the too high rates, a parent is always the best teacher for a child to learn. Hands on is really the best way to guide a child.

    • We have also tutorial centers in the city. I find it so expensive. However, some parents don't have enough time to deal with the weaknesses of their children in studies. In some point, I cannot see any effects on their children and parents are not allowed to observe the classes in tutorial centers.

In terms of online teaching, I had been working in this kind of industry. I had observed the progress of the students first-hand. The teaching per se is being monitored by the company and there is no way virtual teachers not to teach during the class sessions.

    • I think that guidance is must for green students but for all persons as old men of our societies provide us guidance in all walk of life I think it is just like tuition but free of cast. I think tuition means while reading or studying the books if the students fall prey to trouble the tutor will help the students at the spot.

The other meaning of tuition is that some children are weak cannot understand at school properly to provide them guideline at home the teacher is hired is call tuition.

tuition is an extra benefit for the students to clear the doubtful concepts about any subjects.
