Pros and cons of legalizing drugs

Legalizing drugs is fine for a couple of insignificant countries. But for a progressive country like ours, which has lot to contribute to the betterment of the world, it would be a step backwards. Why don’t we see that legalizing drugs is perfect for a country that is on its deathbed and in need of palliative care like a man suffering from a massive stroke and doesn’t know where to get proper care and by whom?

If we want to stop use of drugs then let us stop doing so. People- do not listen to them who want us to ban homosexuality, abortion, racism, sexism and feminism before banning the drugs. They should know what they are asking to ban items already banned.

Let’s put our facts straight, we all know that legalization would certainly reduce state deficits by eliminating expenditure on prohibition enforcement, number of court cases, arrests, policing, prosecutions etc. also allowing governments to collect tax revenue on legalized sales but I still do not feel convinced that we can take a risk on our citizen’s health.

However you would be surprised to know that it is not the public but perhaps opponents of the initiative of legalization of drugs are producers and growers themselves. I feel that their worry in this matter is that if the drugs are legalized they will have to produce quality drugs and will have to sell them on controlled price. People pay any price to get illegal drugs but once these are available legally that will not be possible.

Maybe their concern includes the fact that that if the use of drugs is legalized it might go to the large corporations or maybe the tobacco industry will step forward and use its influence taking over the control, driving out the illegal farming of cannabis and marijuana. There are hundred and one reasons for politicians to keep things the way in its present form.

    • Drug legalization would yield tax revenues of $46.7 billion annually, assuming legal drugs were taxed at rates comparable to those on alcohol and tobacco, they said. Approximately $8.7 billion of this revenue would result from the legalization of marijuana, $32.6 billion from legalization of cocaine and heroin, and $5.5 billion from legalization of all other drugs.

“Legalization would reduce state and federal deficits by eliminating expenditure on prohibition enforcement -- arrests, prosecutions, and incarceration -- and by allowing governments to collect tax revenue on legalized sales,” Miron and Waldock wrote.

Marijuana is already believed to be the nation's number one cash crop, exceeding the combined value of wheat and corn. Pot is also the leading cash crop in at least a dozen states, including California and North Carolina.

Of course, opponents of drug legalization argue that passage of the ballot would increase crime and ultimately worsen peoples' health,
rendering legalization a danger to public safety, offsetting the potential economic gains.
