Platonic friendship is defined as a friendship between two of the opposite gender with no inclination towards sex. Or physical intimacy.
This is fine as far as the dictionary goes but in truth does this kind of a friendship ever exist? Ostensibly it might appear that way but in reality is this kind of a friendship ever possible.?
Physical contact is a no no in such friendships. What happens for example if these two friends decide to go on a holiday and share the same bed. Can the man keep his hands off his partner?
When there is togetherness can these two keep away from intimacy?
If either of the two or both are not physically inclined because of some health issues this kind of friendship can exist but when both are fit and fine physically can two people be left alone and expect them to behave?
Many a friendship is broken when the man breaks his promise and makes advances much to the frustration of his partner ending an otherwise strong bond they may have built over the years.
It is therefore necessary when two decide to have a platonic relationship they should avoid being alone but always move around in the company of others. This may not be always possible specially for example if they decide to share the same apartment or plan on a holiday together.
Now a question arises. Why Platonic. These days couples are seen in a live in relationship where it is understood the word platonic does not exist.
The bad effects of a platonic relationship could be that one needs to be always on guard and this may not be good for one’s mental health.
If I had a choice I would rather opt for a live in relationship as I have had this experience of someone trying to be just friends and then going one step further.

I agree that it's common for a close relationship between two opposite-sex individuals to involve a little flirtation or a momentary spark of attraction.
