What Picnic Has Taught Me Today

What do you think you would like to have when you go picnic? I used to think we have to cook some noodles, prepare some sandwiches, make a jar of drink, cut some fruits and perhaps more. Everything is put inside a basket. A carpet is needed and perhaps some books are good too.

These were what my mom prepared when we went to picnic when we were young. I like to idea of picnic, hence when I have my own children, I would like to go picnic with them too. When my elder son was young, he suggested we go picnic in the park after reading a picture book about picnic. I told him I did not prepare anything and it was late to the park if I had to do the preparation. He told me we need not prepare anything, but just bring a few packs of biscuits. To him, eating in the park is considered as picnic and it is fun.

According to Merriam Webster Dictionary online, picnic refers to a meal that is eaten outdoors especially during a trip away from home. It does not specify what food or how we need to prepare for picnic, so having some biscuits in the park is also considered as picnic. Kids are really simple. They do not need expensive or delicious food, they just enjoy the special time with the loved ones, especially the parents.

I planned to go to the park and jog this morning, but my elder son refused to go jogging and he did not allow me to go too. Then I just suggested we go picnic. He was excited and started to prepare some food. He packed some breads, lettuce and roasted seaweed. He also reminded me to get a bottle of water. We just found a place to sit down in the park, and the children started to eat their bread. The children were happily eating the bread in the park. As it was already quite late, so we spent only less than 30 minutes in the park. It was just like we were having breakfast in the park, instead of at our home.

What I have learned from this simple picnic:

1) Kids are simple.

They do not need much money or things to be happy. They can be really happy by just a small thing, and they just need us to be there with them.

2) Be creative when having challenges with children and solution can be really simple.

I was facing a challenge this morning where my younger daughter wanted to go to the park, but the elder did not. He did not allow me to go too. I had tried to persuade him but failed to do so. At last, before I wanted to ignore him and just go to the park, I was glad that I thought of the idea of “picnic”. It solved the problem and everyone was happy.

Life is always full of lessons. Even a simple picnic lets me learn so much from the kids.

    • Even now when I hear the word 'picnic' happiness surrounds me. I have organised and gone on several picnics during my younger days and it used to be fun all the way.
That was indeed clever of you to lure your kid.

    • Yes, picnic teaches many things in life and I think new creative ideas come into mind while making picnic with friends out of home. Some only see company picnics as an expense, but when you really think about what they can do for you and your staff, it seems silly not to make the investment.

A company picnic changes your employees’ outlooks and, in some cases, it can change your own perspective on some of your work and responsibilities.

When you host a picnic with activities and fun, you are setting yourself up to learn a few things about your staff members. Not only will you find out personality traits, quirks, senses of humor and talents that you might not have known about before, but your staff members will also be learning the same things about their co-workers. This builds camaraderie, trust and friendship.

Sometimes you just need to get everyone together for purposes other than making money and driving profit to keep the fun around the office, warehouse or job-site alive and well.

    • Lee Ka..Good experience indeed. We may learn a great deal from such articles. Actually our kids want our attention. When they have it they are happy. When we do not pay any heed to their demands they think they are not given their bit of importance. So sometimes they become rude and irresponsible. Some of them suffer from inferiority complex which badly affects their personality. So we should be mindful of the fact that our children must take part in extracurricular activities.

    • Lee Ka.. your article reminds me one of my own experiences with my family. We were out on picnic. My younger brothers and sisters chose a place in the park. But the youngest one did not like the place saying that it was not clean. Actually some people who had been there for some time had left the place covered with litter. Disposable cups, cans and peels of fruit had spoiled beauty of the place. Our great mom started removing and collecting the litter. We all assisted her but the youngest one of the family was reluctant. We convinced him by telling him that we are all educated people and we know that it is our duty to keep these places neat and clean. In response, he said "It means those who covered the place with that litter are not educated".We told him that either they are uneducated or they do not want any responsibility. He was satisfied for the time being and he actually helped us in his own way.
