Personal Observation: Flyovers Vs Continuous Elevated Roads

Traffic Management in Big Cities

Traffic Management in Big cities and their suburban areas is a big time issue. With increasing number of vehicles in most of the big cities and even medium and small cities, the traffic management is an even bigger problem.

Often, we hear about systems like Integrated Traffic Management Systems(ITMS), intelligent cameras and Traffic lights.

Yet traditional means like Flyovers, one-way diversions do still play an important role.

More on this in the next section.

Role of Flyovers in Traffic Management with their Pros and Cons

When traffic becomes more and more, red lights see big stoppages. To curb such stoppages, flyovers are made so that many of the vehicles going in straight direction go non-stop.

In New Delhi, from 1999 to early 2000s, many flyovers were built, especially along the Ring Road.

They helped people to travel in straight directions unhindered.

In fact, so many flyovers have been made that the total such flyovers in Delhi might be equal to or more than those in many Developed Nations, with perhaps only surpassed by big cities in China and United States or Germany.

Some even began calling Delhi as “City Of Flyovers”.

Yet Flyovers did not lead to the problems of Traffic being eradicated totally.

Some flyovers were not properly designed. At the points where flyovers descended, and traffic merged, there were either Bus stops nearby, or due to faulty design, there was massive traffic congestion.

Also in Delhi, the number of vehicles increased so much that even Flyovers began to have massive jams. And driving on a flyover where one has to go upstream, in first or second gear, applying breaks and under the fear that the car or other vehicle might slip back a little is very tough.

Another aspect as per some urban planners is that such facilities like flyovers promote more private vehicles usage.

Continuous Elevated stretches vs Flyovers

Then comes the concept of continuous Elevated road, also called as Elevated road, or corridor.

Here multiple concrete slabs are joined- mostly are precast now a days and supported on very strong pillars, as also used in Metro constructions. Such roads initially take more time to be made, but the advantage is that 5 to 6 Kms or even more distance can be covered. This presents the benefit that the whole stretch can be used for rapid movement of the vehicles without any interruption.

So far I have not seen any disadvantage of elevated roads which cover a bigger span than flyovers, but Urban planners might still see such stretches as promoting private over public transport.

May be, such elevated corridors can have dedicated bus lanes, or some kind of trains, that could help transport more number of people?

    • Yeah...In Delhi it is only at some places the flyovers are designed poorly. But in Hyderabad there are many. The politicians in order to get some political fund have colluded with the contractor which ultimately resulted in the poor construction of flyovers. Tat is the result of collapse of a flyover near Punjagutta in the year 20011. As you said rightly, at some places the shops were asked to pay some handsome amount so that the flyover can take a different route. The shop keepers in order to get their business without any disturbance have paid the amounts and the flyover is given a different route. At Narayanaguda in Hyderabad the flyover ends abruptly. The reasons is known well to the Government and to the Contractors. There are many loopholes that have taken place in the construction of flyovers in Hyderabad. It is actually a big sandal. Everybody had got their own share and as such we will be fools to talk about such irregularities.
It is only after the end Congress Government effort is on to keep everything in the right track.

This is the story in many cities in India. Bigger cities are still a bit better due to some citizens awareness, and their contacts among Government folks.
However, smaller cities are bereft of even talk of Traffic Management.
