Panama’s Children of the Moon

Innocents Pay a High Price for Ignorance.

At the age of about 8 or 9 years old, I saw a young boy who was “white everywhere”! His skin, his hair, his eyebrows! Asked my mother about him and she casually remarked: “He’s an albino.” That was the entire discussion. I accepted it and moved on because I knew that the next time my path was crossed by another person who looked like that little boy, I could say to myself:  ‘No problem.  That person is an albino.  Still an ordinary human being like you or me.  Just that they’re called an albino.’  The first kid I saw was a nice kid! He didn’t seem that much different from me. Simple enough. Right?

NO! Not simple. Read some very upsetting information provided in an article published in 2015.

There are people who believe body parts of albinos have magical powers.

As a result, do you know what they do??  __________. Can you fill in the blank?  If you can’t, here are few words that might conjure up some images or provoke some thoughts so that you can imagine the things that people do these innocent children.

Take heart.  This post ends on a happy note!

If you have an interest in what’s happening around the world that usually does not get reported in mainstream media, subscribe to the Global Voices newsletter.  The digest for the week of June 15 to June 21, 2015 was a bit depressing but … sometimes real life is a sad state of affairs.   On the plus side, one thing leads to another and after skimming the discouraging and distressing headlines, I decided to hunt for some good news that might be taking place around the world and found a great article.

Happy to share this, especially because it pertains to children around the world. This article is a perfect follow-up to that horrific article referenced above about albino children.
