Other Search Engines

Although we think ‘To Google’ is a synonym for “To Search”  there are other search engines.

One of the reasons why one would chose other search engines is to cut down the power of Google as Arbiter of what we are allowed to see.

As Google marks down writing sites, and promotes Wikipedia and paid advertisers, it does suit us to find other venues.

You can test this ‘theory’.  Put the name of an item you published here into a Google search  and see if it comes up.

I bet you’ll find items with similar names, items with dissimilar names, but not your item.

The power of Google can not be exaggerated.  It has the power to prevent you knowing.

Consider this carefully, for it is true.

Further, as it keeps a record of all your searches, which it sells to advertisers, (or gives to Security services)  it suits you to explore your options.

 Bing

Yes, this is Microsoft product, so there is a natural resistance. However, give it a try  It is not too different from Google and gives you pretty much the same results.

 Dogpile

This is an unaligned site. I like it because it turns up items on ‘Content Farms’.  The same failed test you did using a Google will appear in Dogpile, but NOT on Bing.

An item on a publishing site will be found on Dogpile.

wow

This is more of a news service. You can try it, but it’s not very good.

 ixquick

This is the most private of all Search Engines.   It does not start it’s report with Wikipedia.  It is clean and fast.

 Duckduckgo

This is a site I’ve used over the years because it keeps no record.   I am so anti-record because those who keep such things  sell them to advertisers.

Use it without fear.

 Yahoo

One of the browsers has decided to make Yahoo it’s homepage so you’re probably using it without thinking.  It is not particularly good.

What you want in life is choice.  Yeah, I like chocolate ice cream, but I want a choice because sometimes I want Coffee.
