This monkey strayed into our vicinity

This happened last year. We saw this little baby monkey making his presence felt all over the place in the vicinity. Monkeys are known for their pranks and so no matter how friendly this monkey was none dared to befriend him –  indeed a sad plight. . He was alone probably left his family for whatever reason and this parents must have been searching for him high and low.

Although it was a friendly kind,  not knowing what is in store none of us ventured into inviting him in. He was quite independent doing what he thought best to amuse himself. I even saw him doing the trapeze act on a cable that brought us TV programs.

Our compound is laden with fruit. We let him eat to his heart’s content.

Each morning he would give out a cry quite ominous specially hearing it when there was pin drop silence all around. I captured that cry in my video.

His favorite fruit was the jackfruit. He would climb up the tree with ease, sit on one of the branches and have a fill, throwing the seeds down.

He also did yoga exercises. He would climb up on our water terrace and I could see him doing several yoga poses.

Once he was seen sitting in the hall of one of our neighbors. They drove him away although they did that most unwillingly as such were his endearing ways.

We have an almond sapling growing in our compound – courtesy the monkey who by the way we decided to call Charlie. Charlie used to munch probably other fruits that he picked up from other compounds and must have thrown an almond seed which has now grown into a plant. We have decided to call that plant Charlie.

Charlie is not seen here these days. May be his mother spotted him and took him away

I miss Charlie.

A group of scientists studied the behavior of Barbary macaque monkeys in a social experiment. They found that the older the monkeys are, the more likely they are to prefer less company, just like adult humans. This behavior dds to the growing list of similarities between humans and monkeys.

Monkeys who were aged 20 and above preferred having limited social interaction. They tend to avoid or withdraw from others of the same age but still welcomed younger monkeys who want to interact. The research said that these older monkeys are still attuned to their social ecosystem but prefer not to take actively part in it.
