The title can be translated as “I don’t want old things.” It should not be said by someone in poverty who is offered second hand clothing. It should not be said when religious organisations from America send clothing after a disaster as charity.
A gentleman who returned to Jamaica after many years in America had opened a small business. After a hurricane the church he had belonged to in America sent him 17 barrels of clothing. He had to park his car in the road.
He went to give away the clothing to one of the ‘relief agencies’ and the people for whom the clothing was meant for rejected it. “Tell them to buy me new things!” One shouted at the gentleman.
I spoke to a member of Parliament about it and she didn’t see the problem. “Who wants second hand clothing? Let them send new things.”
I told the gentleman, “Tomorrow when you go to work, leave the gate open as if you forgot, you neighbours should steal the barrels.”
So said, so done, and he was able to park his car inside. It was the last attempt he made at being ‘charitable’.
A friend of mine had, many years ago, given her clothing to her church. When she tried more recently, she heard the ‘old bruk’ argument.
She now burns her clothing in the yard.
When I have things I don’t want, I often put them in a box, tape it, and leave it somewhere. People will think it is worth stealing and move with it.
I want to give my clothing to the poor, but they don’t want it. They want brand new fancy things they can wear to dances. So, I leave it for the garbage men. I know they’ll dump it and a bunch of poor people will search the garbage for anything they can use or sell.
Hopefully, they will find my ‘old bruk’ and as I haven’t given it to them but they sort of ‘stole’ it, they’ll use it.

In America we have Goodwill stores. They take second hand stuff and sell it at really low prices. It's for low income people, but anybody can shop there and buy lots of used items at great prices. I can understand if people don't want you dumping on them. I mean … giving something a dog wouldn't even wear. But used clothing is nothing new. (Excuse the pun.) If you came from a big family, you probably wore hand me downs. I suspect an ulterior motive is behind requesting new items instead of “old bruk”. I don't know what the reasoning is, but I do know charity is charity and it doesn't wear a mask. A person who receives charity is usually grateful for whatever they get. I know I am! Most of my clothes are “old bruk” and also my other property (TVs, furniture, etc.) is “old bruk”.
I know what you are saying. We gave things to Good Will, and it has only been in the past few years that I've been dumping them.
It is so bad, that Politicians do NOT give money to parents who beg for school fees... they pay the fees to the school because the mother will take the money to get another tattoo.
