Too Many Hurdles; why publishing sites fail (1)

I joined this ‘writing’ site; I’ll call it Scrib.   It didn’t seem to be different than the other sites, except it has a very long TOS; (terms of service).

Most people don’t read the TOS, and in some cases I don’t either.  I assume it says the usual; don’t plagiarise, don’t use bad language, we’ll pay you when we get around to it.

I wrote an item.   An image was needed so I found one, then submitted the item.

The mod alerted me that there was a problem with the ‘image’.   The image size had to be something like 600×300.

Thinking it was simple, I went to find one of those dimensions which matched the article I had written.

There was  no image I could find  that complied.

After wasting about ten minutes searching, I had a bit of back and forth with the Mod.

As that was fruitless, I  went back to my submission, deleted it, and ran from the site as if it were a house on fire.

What kind of idiots create a web site… a publishing site… which demands the writer search for an image of  specific dimensions?

Scrib, like others of its ilk has gone into the great Cyber Void.

It is joined by other sites which have this twisted idea of ‘copyright’.

Let me be straight…  you find an image on the Internet by doing a search. You use the image.   If anyone claims to have the ‘rights’ to that image…(and can prove it, of course) you take down the image.

Simple.

There are billions of images on the Net.  Many are put there for people to see and use…(heard about ‘going viral; right?)

Those who don’t want their photos or drawings used have a copyright marked right there on the image.

If I use your image and you ask me to take it down, and I take it down… no harm/no foul.

I say all this as 99.999% of all publishing sites are not picky with images. They know how easy it is to take down the one which is questioned.

So, what’s the problem if an item is set off with this image or that one?

As soon as a site annoys me with this ‘copyright’ thing, I’m gone.

I have respect for my writing.  I join a site to share my ideas. If a site doesn’t respect me, and wants me to do the dog’s body work for pennies…no.

Many publishing sites, like Scrib,  fail because the owners/ mods give the writer too much esoteric work.   The best writers don’t have time or interest in doing it, so pack up their words and log off.

    • Thank you for sharing your experience. I have heard about Scrib but never got around to signing up.

        • Yes. Any site that wants to survive should make the experience user-friendly. Members come from all backgrounds with so much to offer. They may have a passion or expertise that could really pull in traffic to the site. But because the owners did not make the site easy to navigate, they get frustrated, give up and leave! It does happen! Owners need to recognize people come in at all levels of experience – newbies, intermediate and advanced. The newbie will get confused and leave because it was too hard to get started. The intermediate or advanced may have had experience elsewhere that was not as difficult, throw up their hands and say “Forget this! I'm outta here!” Know what I mean? Then again ... maybe the site owners are new to the game and haven't learned what to do themselves. Who knows?? (O.o)

    • I was never on Scrib. I agree with you. I work only on those sites where I feel comfortable.

    • And what about sites that edit our blogs and give it a new look wiping out your writing style. I am out of such sites too

      • I have never had that experience. The only time certain articles I wrote were edited, the editor let me know the changes and it was up to me to keep the article or trash it. What sites have you been at that edited your work to the point of wiping out your writing style? (O.o)

        • There is a particular new site which your work is 'edited'. When you look at it... that is NOT what you said! It isn't just a change of heading... it's not your item.
