How to Make Your Own Coconut Oil

This is labour intensive, but worth it.

Get a number of dry coconuts, split them and take out the hard white meat.

Get a grater and grate the hard meat until you have a lot of it.

Now put it in a deep bowl or bucket and fill with water until all the coconut is covered.   Let sit for a few hours.

Take a thin cloth.   Put the coconut pieces in the thin cloth and squeeze over another bowl.  You want to squeeze hard to get out as much liquid as you can.

When there is no coconut left to squeeze you can take the liquid left at the bottom of the container and pour it into the bowl.

Use the dry coconut to feed birds.

Put the liquid you have squeezed into a pan on the fire.  You put it at a low flame and let it cook for a time.  You will see the separation and lots of white froth forming at the top.

Keep going until the separation is complete.

Spoon off the froth, (custard).  Lots of children love the way it tastes.   What is left at the bottom will be pure coconut oil.

    • I never thought that it is easy to make coconut oil. It sounds messy but fun to have personal coconut oil. Some elders in my country use coconut oil for healing purposed. The grated coconut meat is also good to feed to chickens and it is definitely wasted.

    • Is scraping good enough or could the scrapings be ground for faster result. This seems a good way to get oil. That stuff that remains must smell good. Have you tasted it?

    • Of course... I make it. I usually get a bunch of children and let them grater the coconut. I don't like the custard, but they love it.. so I pay them in custard. Smells great of course...
