Loneliness Link to Alzheimer’s Disease

Everyone has to grow old one day.

Your memory may gradually failed you and your concentration power may decline sharply.

This is one of the sign of Alzheimer’s Disease which is lurking among elderly folks and people who had been living alone for years.

Tested and proven that Loneliness Leads to Alzheimer’s Disease

Researchers who had conducted 2000 elderly people without any dementia symptoms had proven that lonely people are likely to develop dementia after  3 YEARS of staying alone.

According to the research results, 62% of them had developed dementia symptoms due to loneliness while 35% of them had dementia even though  they had lived with family members.

This was caused by long term depression, isolation and lost of friends.

However, middle age single status people ( bachelors and spinsters) are unlikely to develop dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease at early stage due to their different lifestyle.

Which means, single people do not feel lonely even though they are living alone due to physical activities involved and connection to the outside world.

Only those people who are adapted to lonely lifestyle, cutting off contact from the public are more than TWICE likely to develop Alzheimer’s Disease.

How to reduce loneliness

In order to reduce the feeling of loneliness, especially retirees, it is wise change your personality, behavior and living lifestyle as following:

  1. Find a new hobby. Give yourself sometime to do things that you like or keen to learn. It is never too late to learn a skill, to develop interest if you try. By occupying yourself with activities, you will feel happy with your accomplishments, having new friends with the same interest. ( Example: gardening, dancing, singing, cooking, baking, board games, learning foreign language, blogging )
  2. Don’t reject young people. Old folks are sensitive towards young people different lifestyles, dress up, opinions  which are totally opposite from theirs. Try to interact with young people especially your grandchildren who are innocent, lively and willing to hear your stories.
  3. Be friendly. Try to smile, strike  conversation with your neighbors, your loved ones or strangers. When you are nice to others, they will return the same kindness to you. People will feel happy and willing to accompany you whenever you feel lonely.
  4. Go out. Enjoy outings with your loved ones and friends. Do not pull a sulky face. Try to accept new places, new food, don’t be shy to ask questions and tell them your opinions. If you are tired of walking, let them know. Don’t give excuses that make them feel bad and lousy.

    • Living alone does not mean they have no activity. It is the activity that often connects with other people that can enliven loneliness and thus keep Alzheimer's disease away.

    • I think that progressive mental deterioration that can occur in middle or old age, due to generalized degeneration of the brain. It is the commonest cause of premature senility.

Alzheimer's is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks.

Alzheimer's is not a normal part of aging, although the greatest known risk factor is increasing age, and the majority of people with Alzheimer's are 65 and older. But Alzheimer's is not just a disease of old age. Up to 5 percent of people with the disease have early onset Alzheimer's (also known as younger-onset), which often appears when someone is in their 40s or 50s.

I have read that lthough current Alzheimer's treatments cannot stop Alzheimer's from progressing, they can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms and improve quality of life for those with Alzheimer's and their caregivers. Today, there is a worldwide effort under way to find better ways to treat the disease, delay its onset, and prevent it from developing.
