Let’s celebrate World Breastfeeding Week

I know it might be too late to celebrate this, as World Breastfeeding Week is from 1 to 7 August 2016. It is already 7 August, and I am sure when this article is published, it is already over. I just knew this World Breastfeeding Week from a blogger friend whom I have been reading her blog since I was pregnant with my first child. She has been breastfeeding for the past 8 years, and I have some breastfeeding knowledge and confidence from her blog. So, I think even though I am late to join the celebration of this event, it should not stop me from sharing this to bring awareness of the importance of breastfeeding to the people.

World Breastfeeding Week was started in year 1991, and it is celebrated from 1 to 7 August every year. There is different theme for different year, and this year, it is on raising the awareness of the links between breastfeeding and the Sustainable Development Goals. I did not realize what these goals are until reading about this World Breastfeeding Week, so I think it is good to help spreading this information even though the event is already over, the effort of working on it should not be stopped.

How we can help to bring awareness?

Tell our friends or family members the importance of breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is still not very common among my friends. So, whenever any of my friends or family members is pregnant, I always encourage them to breastfeed the baby. I am happy to share my experience with them or help them if they have any questions or worries. Of course, I am not a lactation consultant, I am just sharing my experience as a mom and showing my support.

Support anyone who is breastfeeding

It is really not easy to breastfeed, especially for the first timer. Support from family members, especially from husband is especially important. I have heard many mothers have given up because there were no support from the family, and there were always advice for stop breastfeeding and start formula milk feeding. So, sometimes even when a mom wants to breastfeed the baby, she might give up because of no support from the family.

Breastfeed our baby

I have always remember reading the statement from WHO (World Health Organization), it is recommended to exclusively breastfeed our baby up to 6 months old, and along with commentary food up to 2 years old or beyond.  So, whenever other commented I should not breastfeed my baby for so long, I just told them what WHO recommend. Of course, this is what WHO recommended, and I believe we should always do what we feel comfortable with.

The above listed are actually to bring awareness of breastfeeding generally, not so much about the theme for World Breastfeeding Week 2016. You can visit World Breastfeeding World official website to find out more information about the link breastfeeding and the Sustainable Development Goals. You can also help to raise awareness of this event and also the importance of breastfeeding.
