It’s Beautiful To Look At, But It’s Dangerous

We live in Albay province at Bicol Region of the Philippines, where the most famous landmark that attracts many tourists is.
This famous landmark is Mayon Volcano, a perfect cone shape and active volcano that is surrounded by towns outside of its declared danger zone, by PhilVocs. It has a height of 2,462 meters or 8,077 feet.
It actually had 49 eruptions already and continues to be active even now.
It has claimed a lot of lives during some very big eruptions. On July 14, 2006, PhilVocs recorded lava flows and ash explosions as high as 800 meters from Mayon Volcano.
The lava, molten ashes, boulders were deposited at its foot. These were all flushed down to nearby towns by a flash flood which also caused landslides, when typhoon Reming hit the Bicol Region on November 30, 2016.
It claimed more than 1,000 lives from those living Mayon.
I can never forget typhoon Reming.
The day after it erupted, as I was riding the jeepney going to our hometown to visit how my parents and relatives are, we passed by a funeral parlor and saw lots of dead bodies, just piled one on top of another at its garden because they are going to be embalmed.
These dead people came from those towns near Mayon that was on the path of the flash floods that also caused landslides.
Even the town plaza of Daraga, Albay was filled with dead people from the towns near the Mayon Volcano, deposited there for embalming by the various funeral parlors.
But the biggest eruption recorded, was February 1814, that claimed more than 1,200 lives.
Recently, since September 08, 2016, PhilVocs has raised its alert level because there have been noted volcanic activities. Thus, Mayon climbing and other activities around its out of danger zone base
is restricted.
Summer is nearing, so businesses like Mayon climbing and all-terrain vehicles for hire for those tourists who would like to see Mayon Volcano at a safe distance or just being at its foot where a rest house is, are waiting for the go signal of PhilVocs that it is already safe to be visited.
As of now, the alert level isn’t lowered yet but is still being assessed as to whether it will already be safe for tourists to come near it.
Thus, tourists can now just take photos of Mayon Volcano from anywhere that is outside the declared danger zone by PhilVocs.
s you can see in the picture, it is breathtakingly beautiful, being a perfect cone shaped volcano.
But don’t be deceived by its beauty because when it erupts so strongly, it can wipe out all the living and non-living things of a place on the path of the rolling magma and lava.

    • You're right. It's a very beautiful scenic place, but as you pointed out, it could be very dangerous. I wouldn't want to live there, but it definitely would be a place I'd like to put on my bucket list as a place to visit some day.

      • Yes, please put it in your bucket list of places to visit. You will be so proud posing for a picture with the Mayon Volcano in the background.

You can actually ride those all-terrain vehicles and go to the foot or a bit up the slope of Mayon Volcano. Actually, the PhilVocs or Philippine Vocanologist Authority always issue a restriction or alert level warning if ever they monitor some activity of the Mayon. So, tourists can only come near it when it;s not having activities.

The towns are usually out of its danger zone. Though when they have monitored it to seemingly erupt, they warn all the near towns' people to evacuate for safety.
