How Safe you are on Facebook?

The popular social network Facebook currently has well over one billion daily users worldwide. Yes, a billion. It is, therefore, no wonder that criminals are doing their best in different ways, trying to lure those billion users with their hard earned money, personal information and in the process, infect their computers with Trojans and malware. You may say that there is antivirus to protect you and your site, but the best protection is always knowledge. In this article let us know how to avoid threats.

The problem with security on the popular social network platform Facebook is that we as users are made to believe into a false sense of security that gives the impression that we are safe within the social network. It is partly due to the fact that almost everyone we have contact with on facebook are those we have as friends. Because of this very reason, people are more likely to click on links in status updates and other instant messages that appear to have come from our acquaintances.

At the same time,  just because it appears to have come from a friend we know, do not at all mean that it has, in fact, come from such a friend we know. You do not know who is sitting on the other side of the computer. Hijacking Facebook accounts are very common these days. A very common and most widely used method to obtain login information for any Facebook account is to look at all the membership leaking for different purposes.

It may be less on places like e-shops, discussion forums, and other websites. Because of the simple reason that such a large part of the users have the same email address and password on more than one website, it becomes very easy to test data on other major known websites.

One tip is to always having unique passwords for each and every website you use. Definitely, keeping and remembering a lot of different passwords in their head is not possible for anyone, especially, the modern Internet generation who may have membership on hundreds of different websites and services out of which many of them would have been forgotten by now. But put in a system to always use unique passwords for you to avoid the problem that may occur when a website gets hacked, and its membership list leaks out.

The easiest way to solve this problem is to use a program like LastPass. It manages all your passwords and protects them with a master password. When you register at a new website, you can easily generate a new and strong password, and these passwords are stored in LastPass in an encrypted form.

In addition to remembering all the passwords, LastPass has several smart features too. For example, it automatically fills in the login form, so there is no need for you to enter the username and password. LastPass will take care of it. What’s more? The program adds itself as a supplement in your browser.

    • @Rajaraman K I do not think many are aware of the 'Lastpass' programme which seems to take care of security guarding our passwords.

    • I am not sure with the Lastpass. All I know, people who are members of this social network can endanger their lives. I, myself had randomly visited it. The reason, some posts don't have the sense at all. The manner of sharing things here by the people are becoming overrated.

The security is also questionable. Why? This social network is the source of cyber bullying and it can destroy the life of innocent people. In reality, there are some cases that people died because of believing things posted on Facebook. If I am going to make a software, I will stop cyber bullying by closing their accounts. In this way, no one will not be hurt because of deception by the bad people.

    • Over the years many of us have come to love Facebook and spend unprecedented amounts of time on the world’s most popular social networking site. But even in 2013 it’s worth thinking about our safety on Facebook and taking a few steps to make sure that we aren’t giving away more information than we want to.

Take a look at our top 10 tips to stay safe on Facebook and don’t forget to share these tips with your friends and family!

It’s not all about the numbers of friends. Remember when you accept a friend request you provide your new friend with access to lots of information about you. This includes, posts, photographs, messages and all the background information that you write about yourself. You can delete friends at any time, so perhaps it’s time to refresh your list and think about who you really want accessing your information.

Ask yourself what you want to achieve with your profile. Is it just to share photos, or keep in touch with people, or even to share links and updates of your activities? Sometimes it’s better to cut down what you show on your profile; this includes signing up to applications which also take a lot of your data. You can always add or remove options as you go, so if your needs change, so should your profile.

    • Facebook is the fastest growing social networking site in the world today with up to 250,000 new users being added every day. But sharing information has lots of risks including your name which can be accessed by others and your profile can be viewed.

Anyone can get valuable information and private photos from your profile -- ultimately getting you in big trouble. You can keep your misfortunes down to a minimum by following these steps.

Always monitor pictures that other people put of you and tag you on. You can see the tagged pictures of you by going to your profile, click on "Photos"- you should see "Photos of You" and the number of tagged pictures.

Click on that, and look through the pictures. You should be able to un-tag any unappealing photos of you, but people still have the ability to see it. Don't hesitate for a second to "un-tag" yourself from pictures that you do not approve of. Simply click

"Report/Remove Tag" under the "Options" on the bottom of the picture. Also if you think that the particular picture could put you in a compromising situation, consult whoever put it up and ask him or her to remove it immediately. If they are your so called pals they should comply with your request.

This refers to pictures such as: Dancing-on-the-bar pictures or candid shots of the last time you got hammered with your pals on happy hour. Don't be caught with drugs, especially if you're underage because anyone can just print out the picture and show it to your parents or principal.
