How I Predicted a Win by Ms. France

How I Predicted a Win by Ms. France
(Or maybe I’m just over-thinking things LOL)

Nobody will believe me now but hours before the Miss Universe coronation, I have already picked Ms. France as the winner (my first prediction was either Haiti or France– but I went for Ms. France because of the narrative she unknowingly represents.) I actually have written my prediction as a short status but elected not to post it for I feared strongly accusations of misogynistic tendencies as it may seem I’m discrediting the talent and knowledge of Ms.France (which was not my intention).

How? Why France and Haiti? Well, just check the narrative both candidates can and will represent in a world that’s already ripe with racism, hatred, bigotry and prejudice towards people of color, immigrants, and those who voice out their political views.

But first, why not Ms. Haiti as the Ms. Universe? Compared to Ms. France, the narrative Ms. Haiti represents are survival (remember the earthquake? She survived it), success (she’s finishing her master’s degree– she wants to cure blindness) and racism (she’s from Haiti if you know what I mean). I guess those were not enough. Her stories and her country’s stories are great but it’s not what the world needs now.

Why Ms. France? This is not to discredit her hard work and wit (she’s smart with a charming smile for obvious reasons) but the story of her country and with what’s happening in the world now, I believed, worked in her favor too. A narrative about a country that accepted immigrants and refugees (and people of color too), experienced terrorist attacks, its people standing strong together amidst threats through “We are Paris” ideology, and also the narrative of its perceived continued support of the oppressed are stronger narrative which can be used cautiously to combat (and to counter or as a protest) the oppressive state of the countries currently with leaders who have espoused hate towards certain groups of people as the core of their political platform and administration. (This is not to say that there are no sort of issues with the immigrants-anti-immigrants, refugees and prejudice in France).

You get the idea. It’s the perfect story in today’s political and social situation. A symbolic win in response to the aforementioned societal issues (you know clearly which countries are hinted on).

Remember that a miss universe should advocate for humanitarian issues and should be a voice to affect positive change in the world. This is what is expected of the winner.

Ms. France will become a beacon of hope not only because of the title “Ms. Universe” but also because her country, of what has happened to France in recent history and how it rose up hopeful and stronger. The narrative of France is just what the world needs now as issues on immigration, racism and prejudice are abundant and peddled which cause hate crimes or acts to become rampant.

If only I had the balls to post my fearless prediction. Tsk!

    • I have just seen the question and answer portion of the Miss Universe pageant last night, since I was at work when this was aired on TV.

ANyway, even at the office we already know that it was Ms. France who won.

Ms. Haiti is so beautiful and statuesque and she also answered so beautifully and with confidence. They both have nice answer actually, but yes Ms. Haiti's answer is more one a personal level success, unlike Ms. France's who answered in the national level of her country. And I think that is what made her answer with more bearing and won the Ms. Universe crown.

    • LOL. For years I have been telling my husband that the Miss Universe contest was “political”. Not being mean-spirited and hating on pretty women but I always thought the use of the pageant for pushing political agendas was very subtle and that the ladies were unknowingly just political pawns on a chess board. I told my husband I could guess the outcome by the specific questions and the “crown hopeful's response” who was going to win. He told me what I said was nonsense! When I heard Miss France won, I wasn't surprised. My thoughts were similar to your rationale presented in this post. I give up trying to convince my husband about the pageant. LOL. :)

    • Ah. I watch the Miss Universe contest every year and I can never predict who will win. However, I think Ms. France executed her questions diligently and represented her country well, or at least better than the other countries. My personal favourite was Haiti, so it's a shame that she did not end up winning. An overall beautiful and interesting pageant as it is every year.
