Good Old Memories: A Hope of Survival for Old Men

Every living thing has to cross three stages: a beginning, middle and an end be animal plant or man self. Old age is very tough age when human life organs make less energy due to be old, human hands, legs do not work properly likewise human brain falls prêt to different types of diseases and man becomes a scarecrow standing in the middle of the field to frighten the toddlers and playing children instead of birds.

But your youth be full of pleasures and happy memories of four season, autumn, winter, summer and spring, when such person becomes old he reminds of his happy past and remains happy telling others what they have been doing in the past.

That is why we see that a politician is happier than a common old man who spent his life in business or in dishonesty. Such persons’ old age becomes very painful and tough. That is why the old age of pros becomes very tearful due to all black deeds in her life book.

When I become old he all day thinks of youth and he knows very well that his time of departure from this world has come. Thinking this he becomes very upset therefore we all must lead an honest and simple full happiness and pleasure so that we could be happy in old age. Last night I read a story about an old man who was a locomotive engine driver I want to share with my readers.

Mr. Greeley, the driver of a locomotive whom he called Daisy lovingly, was spending his last days with his daughter in a cozy room recalling all day Daisy in his mind. His wife died when he was seventy five years old.

Now he was spending his life as a retired engine driver. So his family comprised three or four members and all were living in a comfortable home. Often he used to go to see Daisy in the Museum to make fresh his old memories and talked to her all his secrets sitting in the cabin. He considered her to be his life partner.

“Hello, Daisy,. He said softly, “Another morning,

Old girl.” Daisy stood impassively.

She has no means of replying.”

It was an emotional attachment of Mr. Greeley with old Daisy. It was her friendship that compelled him to go to see her daily in the Museum. Actually he wanted to share his emotions with Daisy because there was none to talk to him at his home. Reaching there he cleaned it and sat in the driver seat and started talking with her as a true friend in loneliness and made her heart happy. After this leaving the Museum he enjoyed wining and dining in an old restaurant to make fresh his past memories in old age.

For Mr. Greeley there was nothing like Daisy all over the world to gossip for hours all alone in the cabin ignoring the passers-by. One day he remembered Daisy more and more and decided to see her in the evening in spite of having illness. As the text shows:

“Stiffly, Mr. Greeley, clambered up Daisy’s steps

And into that cab in which he had spent

Thousands of hours.

His daughter forbade him to do so due to realizing his illness. Ignoring his daughter’s advice he went to see Daisy in the evening. Reaching in the Museum he went straight to Daisy with a happy heart. He kissed it cleaned it and started talking to her. The new attendant forbade him to do so. In the meanwhile the old attendant came and told him that he was allowed to touch, sit and talk to Daisy. So the matter was settled because the old Daisy and Mr. Greeley had been living together for 30 year. As the text shows:

“But Mr. Greeley, in the years when he and his giantess

had lived their life together, had always

called her Daisy.”

To sum up, it is a beautiful story of an old man who got retirement from Railway as an engine driver. After retirement his life is shown disappointing due to his wife’s death that used to share his thoughts, feelings and emotions in solitude.  After her death none was at home to talk to him.

So to spend his extra time he used to go to see the Engine to which he used to call Daisy when got its charge as its driver. It was Daisy who made him happy all day. As we see he died recalling her in his mind and said to her “Good Night old Daisy” as he used to say in young age leaving the station for home in the evening.
