Gadgets and the internet have significant roles in most people’s life. Almost all have accounts on the different social media like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumbler, and other social networking sites.
Most can search and finish school research and projects in just a click. No hardship, no sweat, since almost all information is present on the internet.
But, “the coin has two sides” as they say. “Every action has an equal and opposite reaction,” as what Isaac Newton said.
The advantage of social media can also be a disadvantage, depending on how you use it. Social media can be used for ease of communication, but this can also be used for easy recruitment for terrorism, among other things.
Most of us want attention. Most of us want to have more than hundreds of likes and comments to our posts on social media. It feels like you’re the most beautiful species living on earth when you achieve that. Hence, we keep on posting selfies. But this can also be a cause of identity theft, since all information about ourselves can be accessed in social media, from our personal information, favorite artists, movies, celebrities, and even our motto in life.
Since we don’t want to be off the trend, we keep ourselves updated. This is a bandwagon effect since the majority is there, we should also be there. They called this as “the wisdom of the crowd and the fear to be left out.”
Again, whatever we post can make or break us and even the people around us. Cyber bullying is very much present. Anyone can take a stolen shots or video of someone and uploaded it on social media. This can attract attentions from the netizens. As they say, a picture tells a thousand stories. One who views a picture or a video can make a conclusion or judgment without knowing the real story about it.
Nevertheless, social media is a big help in the sense that it keep us updated on what is happening in our local areas, of the country where we live, and to the entire globe. But since anyone can post news and information, there would be a lack of accuracy and accountability. Information may not be double-checked. Since the internet is uncensored, it is hard to detect who’s fault. Besides, no one is willing to accept responsibility for things.
Hence comes now the judgment on whether to post or not. Think before you post. We should always think of the possible outcomes of our actions and take responsibility for it. Reputation is more important than popularity. It takes a time to build a reputation but takes only one post to destroy it, so be careful.
