Food and Drink History : Joseph Priestly : Praise Him or Punch Him?

I confess I really do enjoy soda, especially a coke or a peach flavored pop drink.   Not sure about other countries but in America you can’t go to a gathering where there is food and not to be able to pick from a wide array of drinks, and the drink selection does NOT include soda. That rarely happens.

Growing up in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, soda was a very popular and “acceptable” drink. But these days, it’s just useless sugar water, the cause of obesity and cancer, etc., etc.etc.

Companies like Coca Cola and Pepsi sell and make sure to link their brand name and goodwill to bottled water and juice. I suppose it’s an effort to assure the public and their loyal customers that it’s not their intention to cause widespread health problems.

Joseph Priestly invented carbonated water in 1767 when he discovered how to infuse water with carbon dioxide.”   The rest, as they say, is food history.

What should we do? Thank the guy or beat him up?

I don’t know if we should praise Mr. Priestly or punch him in the face?

If we punch him there will be a domino effect because after him came a long line of folks who have profited immensely from his discovery.

Why is it everything we like so much we have to sacrifice and give it up?

I like certain cakes that are made with soda like the Seven Up cake. It’s delicious! Oh! And what about ice cream sodas? I love ice cream sodas. My late sister like the root beer float. I usually asked Mr. Smith, the ice cream shop owner, to make mine with strawberry soda. There are so many sweet memories attached to soda in my life.

Ah well! It’s hard to say good bye. But I must!  Or I must at least try!  🙂
