This is the last and seventh word of our Lord Jesus Christ before He breath His last breathe on the Cross of Calvary.
Again, there is the endearing term “Father” a recognition of the authority of the Heavenly Father, and an acknowledgment of His authority and the commitment of the our Lord spirit to the Father.
In His human nature, our Lord Jesus Christ knows that He would die from the very beginning even before His Incarnation here in the world. Even before the creation of man and the world, God knows in his omniscience that the human being that His going to create would one day commit sin and eventually will fall from the state of innocence and the state of grace.
There is only the Father to whom our Lord Jesus Christ commend His very spirit and to no one else.
We can glean from this the total faith and submission of our Lord Jesus Christ to the Heavenly Father and to no one else.
After our Lord Jesus Christ has committed His spirit to the Father He has expired then darkness has surrounded the whole land and the veil in the Holies of Holies in the Temple of Jerusalem was torn from top to bottom signifying the opening of our salvation and the triumph of our Lord Jesus Christ over the world.
It is true indeed that through the cross our Lord Jesus Christ has conquer the whole world.
We can also realize that in the end everything goes to the Source of all Creation which is God itself. St. Augustine once said that our soul find no rest until our soul rest in God.
Our Lord Jesus Christ even at the point of His death has this supreme realization and understanding that God is the source of everything and everything will come back again to God.
That was the last word of our Lord Jesus Christ before His death “Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit.” What word to utter before the end of our earthly life to recognize the Heavenly Father up above and to entrust our spirit to Him alone.
The ultimate sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary cannot be surpass by any religious leader in the past, in the present or in the future for there is one and only one Lord Jesus Christ.
On this Holy Week of April 2017 I pray, reflect, contemplate and meditate on the Last Seven Words of our Lord Jesus Christ while He was then nailed on the Cross of Calvary.
Thank you very much dear Lord Jesus Christ for all your sacrifices so that a sinner like me could have forgiveness for my sins and for the sins of the rest of the world.
Truly, your name JESUS is above all other name on heaven and on earth, and every knee must bend and every head must bow and every lips must confess that you are the only one who is Master and Savior. Amen and Amen.
