An Earthly Woman Deceives the Merman on Earth

I wonder that everybody has read in poems, and prose, in fiction and plays that woman is faithless and her love is unreliable but in practical life I have also seen men also prove faithless to women and all call woman is faithless not man. I say why woman is faithless?

I have pondered over this matter and conclude that woman is beautiful in all shape because her body is magic for men that is why every woman has more chances of getting second love than men in practical field that is woman proves faithless in real life not man. I have written several posts on this topic and received from the women very hard answer because woman is not ready to accept this law that woman nature is faithless basically.

Woman deceived Adam in the Garden of Eden and due to this man was thrown away from paradise forever on earth and its fruit is death came into being all this happened due to woman’s faithlessness not man’s mistake. Every woman on earth says herself faithful but their lovers say that they unfaithful in real life why is true?

Nobody can say man is faithless or woman is faithless I think it depends on the real situation of practical field. I have studied many books about woman’s nature and conclude that basically woman nature is caring and loving but hard conditions make her faithless in practical life and according to me this the real problem. As Medline fled with Porphyro in darkness from her home and her parents could not trace them.

Mathew Arnold’s poem The Forsaken Merman is one of the best poems showing a love-failure story between Margaret an earthly woman and Merman, a seaman. Actually it is a Victorian poem reflecting Victorian current social, economic and intellectual problems.

Sometimes it is considered an anti-Victorian poem and its industrial and mechanical effects on human life…massive increasing poverty, growing class tension and a full pressure towards social and political reforms.

A Merman fell in love of an earthly woman, named Margaret. Both got marriage in the depths of the sea happily. God blessed them seven cute children. Margaret spent a long time in the water-palace with Merman and her sons.

One day on Sunday, Margaret caught a glimpse of an island crossing the sea. Crossing the sea, looking at the church busy life she recalled her family and relatives who were making prayers in the decorated church standing on a sea-shore. She requested the Merman to make join her family and relatives. The Merman allowed her to go there for a short time in these words:

“In the little grey church on the sand, today

It will be Easter time in the world-ah me

And I look my poor soul Merman here with thee,”

Pondering over her request, the Merman gave permission to Margaret to attend the church feast and advised her to come back soon to the shore to go back with them to the water-palace. Therefore, the poet exclaimed in the Merman’s voice in these words:

“Say thy prayer and come back to the kind sea waves”

Reaching there she sat by her relatives were busy saying prayers and Margaret forgot to go back to her family. On the other side Merman and his children were waiting for her with heart and soul on the sea waves in spite of a stormy weather. When she did not come back to them all were very sad and upset. At last looking at the situation the Merman cried in these words:

“She will not come, thou you call all day

Come youngest child to call her,”

Now Merman recalled his past happy days getting disappointment from her arrival and thinks of going back to his water-palace with his children saying these golden lines to his children:

“She sat with you and me

On a red golden throne the heart of the sea

And the youngest sat her thee

She combed her bright hair,”

To sum up, it is a bitter satire on the industrial revolution that disturbed the English people’s social life and the glimpse of it we can see in this story. On the other hand it shows woman’s faithlessness to their lovers.
