How to deal with Baby’s First Fever

My baby is two months old now, and he just experienced his first fever last week. He had his vaccination on Thursday, and the pediatrician told us there are only 1% of the babies will have fever. I am not sure about other places, but here people seem to believe babies will always have fever after the vaccination, so some doctors even advised the babies to take the medicine even before they have fever.

We started to monitor the baby’s body temperature since we came home, and found that he had mild fever since Thursday evening. He started crying unusually, he could not fall asleep comfortably and could not sleep for long too. It is always hard for a mother to see the children falling sick, as we cannot really help them to remove the pain, but they have to go through the pain or suffering themselves. Moreover, babies cannot tell how they feel and which part they are not comfortable with. What we can do is just trying to help them to relieve the discomfort and be there with them. Since my baby was just having mild fever (37 degrees Celcius), and I always try not to give medicines to my children, I just held him all the time. He might still cry when I was holding him, but I know it will make him feel slightly more comfortable. Besides holding him, I also nursed him as much as he wanted to as I also read that breast milk is always the best treatment for baby.

After a full day of holding and nursing my baby, I am glad the fever finally left and my baby was feeling well on Friday evening. I was so grateful to see my baby’s temperature was back to normal. He started smiling and babbling as usual, and sleeping well too. These are the good signs to show the baby is well. I believe my baby is stronger now as he has defeated the sickness for the first time. I know he will have more battles to fight for, and he will always be stronger. As a mother, I will just be there with him and support him as much as I can.

There are different cases when it comes to baby’s fever, I believe as mothers, we have our mother’s instinct to judge and decide what the best medicines are for our baby. I always choose to let them heal themselves naturally, as I believe our body is actually a great warrior. The more we practice, the stronger we will become. So, as long as my children’s temperature is not too high, I would let them heal themselves without taking any medicines. Of course, if the baby’s temperature goes up, it is still better to consult the pediatrician.

What I did when my baby was experiencing his first fever:

1. Hold the baby as frequent or needed as possible so he will feel comfortable and might sleep more

2. Nurse the baby as frequent or needed as possible

3. Monitor the baby’s body temperature

I am not a medical professional, but just a mother who shares her experience, so please do not take any of the healing advice from me, but trust your own mother’s instinct instead.

    • I wonder this will help adults too, holding I mean  On a serious note I am glad you did not medicate your little one. Wish more mothers took note of this.

    • I think vaccination booster for adults will also experience fever. In terms of infant's sake, we really need to closely monitor the body core temperature. Since it is so crucial if the temperature reaches to more than 40 degrees Celsius. If it happens, it can cause convulsions and we don't want this.
