As soon as I got down from the Train I felt very happy to find the cycle rickshaws plying on the roads in and around VARANASI Railway Station.
Cycle Rickshaw though was a cheap mode of transport of a common man, it has disappeared In most of the cosmopolitan cities in India. But, it is still surviving in some remote areas on the outskirts of a city and in some interior districts of certain Sates like Maharashtra, Kolkata.

I have seen and used almost all modern transport systems as a traveler but the urge to experience the cycle-rickshaw as a mode of transport came on the roads of Varanasi very late after a long gap as this transport system is totally not available in Hyderabad and vanished now. I have seen cycle rickshaws on the roads of Calcutta/Kolkata only on the T.V.
The experience to take a ride of the city in the cycle rickshaw is really thrilling.
In Varanasi, this is the most preferred transport by tourists. Whenever you have to reach distinations far flung at 2 or 3 km this is the only transport more convenient and safe to reach than by engaging an auto rickshaw.
The advantage of cycle rickshaw is that it throws a challenge to the strength of your knees as more often you have to get into it by pushing your body into it on the strength of your knee.
The rickshaw man pulls the vehicle slowly as soon as you get into it. As soon as it is pulled to some distance he starts peddling it steadily without any exertion. Of course, you have to bear with the shocks the roads give you for their poor maintenance when he takes you into a narrow lanes as more often the lanes and by lanes will be quite narrow and it is only this transport that can conveniently take you to your destination which otherwise would be not possible with an auto rickshaw. .
It is only this transport that exposes the true condition of roads of any place and you can measure the length and breadth of every road by sight while passing through leisurely.
It reduces the distance sometimes as the rickshaw man will take short-cuts driving his vehicle into small and narrow lanes of the street avoiding the main road.
This convenient and cheap transport is meant not only for children but also for carrying heavy loads of goods from one corner to the other corner of an area safely and promptly as the ultimate control lies in the hands of Puller only who relies on the strength of his feet irrespective of his age and without having any prescribed uniform and drives it in rain, scorching sun, cold and hot breeze on the allurement of some extra pennies.

Cycle Rickshaw is so fascinating to look at. We also have same type local transportation but the structure is totally different. The passengers were not sitting at the back. It is usually installed the extension the side of the motor vehicle.
We also have something similar to this back in my country, but ours are more like motorbikes. You don't cycle. They are quite convenient especially in a country where traffic can be so unbearable. They are easily manauvered through the streets and even though sometimes they are costly, they can save you a lot of time that could be wasted in the jams. Usually when we go for holiday in the coastal region this mode of transport is very popular especially the areas near the beaches. They may look funny when you are inside but that aside they still get you to your destination. We never used tohave them in our country but the person who started them saved quite a number of people. Though now they have become a menace to the commuters and their cars in the central business district, this being the heart of town people may feel insecure because of the congestion. We all know when the town is congested there is a likely good that people will be mugged. So it was dimmed fit for them to operate from outside of the central district to keep town secure and dicongested.
