Courageous or defensive- Your choice

Being defensive is fine but there should be a limit to everything. However the fact is that most of us have become too defensive to the extent where we stop thinking of taking any risks or try to think out of the box. But if you look at the people who are right on the top of the world have done something which stands them out from the crowd.

Being over-defensive especially if applied to avoid stresses or struggles has its own side effects which is even more harmful. If a person does not want to do something because he is not sure about the outcome that certainly is not symptom of being defensive but in my humble views is sign of cowardice.

Robert Greene, the famous American author and speaker attended U.C. Berkeley and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Greene is known for his books on strategy, power and seduction. He has written five international bestsellers and one of them “The 48 Laws of Power” is in our library although he has some other wonderful books “The Art of Seduction”, “The 33 Strategies of War”, “The 50th Law” etc.

Greene says that if we often try to hide our fear by saying that we care for others or we do not want to hurt others feelings by saying something, then in 90% cases they are telling only half the truth. In fact, while trying to hide our own views we’re only trying to keep ourselves from exposure. At times we avoid doing something just because we do not want someone being replaced from his position if we took the initiative.

I have always believed that being courageous is better than being defensive. There is no harm being versatile (if you know the difference in between being outspoken and versatile of course). A versatile character is always a brave one and that’s what matters in the end. Finally, being courageous is not a qualification by birth but one can attain it by practice.
