Corrections Accreditation and Privatization

In 1978, The Commission on Accreditation in Correction was found. This programs provides national standards to all public and private companies that are performing correctional functions. This programs is extremely helpful because it helps correction facilities become better, it gives like a guideline of how to operate the facility. This helps rise the quality of programs and services performed within the correction facility. This affects the professional development of correctional officers by improving management, defense against lawsuits through documentation, an effort to improve the conditions the imprisonment, more accountability and public credibility for administration and line staff, a safer and better environment for offenders and correctional workers, and establishing of criteria that betters employees, programs and the physical plant on an ongoing basis. There are steps that n organization has to follow in order to seek better correctional officer professionalization and accreditation. It is important the the organization have reaccreditation assessment and a few status reports. The reports should include application status, correspondent status, candidate status, and accredited status. There are a few more steps to having a professionalized correctional officer, which are, standards of compliance audit, accreditation hearing, and reaccreditations.

In the last 25 years, there has been a growth within the prison system due to privatization. There are a lot of benefits from privatization. Some includes information on housing capacity to be online for new inmates, construction costs, limitation on the resources on government usage. operation costs, introduces competition, improvement of quality services, and dealing with independent contractors. Makes everything faster and more reliable. The cost of operating prisons and jails are reduced, it is much easier to create programs for prisoners, and are more accountable. For over the past five years, there has been a decline of about 10,000 for state prisoners in private prisons. For federal inmates a headcount of 120,000 is maintained and increasing. Longer private prisons are more like public prisons. For private prisons, they multi task more because they combine different ways to run the prison. They use less management level staff, this helps them administer more, and use the same staffs for security and rehabilitation. Private prisons does not offer much benefits and their salaries are very low for staff members. There are many things that are similar between private and public prisons, they both perform at the same level of work, education, and counseling for the inmates.
