Valour
Courage is the power to face difficulties. It’s the
opposite of being discouraged. Courage comes from
a reserve of mind more powerful than outside
circumstance. When we are bigger than our problems,
we gain the courage necessary to win.
Nothing splendid has ever been achieved except by
those who dared believe that something inside of
them was superior to circumstance.
Man is not the creature of circumstances,
circumstances are the creatures of men.
We are free agents, and man is more powerful
than matter.
Victory becomes, to some degree, a state of mind.
Knowing ourselves superior to the anxieties, troubles,
and worries which obsess us, we are superior to them.
Courage is a special kind of knowledge; the knowledge
of how to fear what ought to be feared and how not
to fear what ought not to be feared.
The beauty of the soul shines out when a man bears
with composure one heavy mischance after another,
not because he does not feel them, but because he is
a man of high and heroic temper.
Cumulative Results
Rome was never built in a day but over time.
Progress begins a step at a time. There is no sudden
leap to greatness. Our success lies in focus on only the next step.
Success then becomes habit forming by working consistently well.
Continuous good work on a project becomes a great work.
The house of success is built brick by brick.
Progress, however, of the best kind, is comparatively
slow. Great results cannot be achieved at once;
and we must be satisfied to advance in life as we walk,
step by step.
The most successful men in the end are those whose
success is the result of steady accretion …. It is
the man who carefully advances step by step, with his
mind becoming wider and wider, – and progressively
better able to grasp any theme or situation, –
persevering in what he knows to be practical, and
concentrating his thought upon it, who is bound
to succeed in the greatest degree.
The person determined to achieve maximum success
learns the principle that progress is made one step
at a time. A house is built a brick at a time.
Football games are won a play at a time. A department
store grows bigger one customer at a time. Every
big accomplishment is a series of little accomplishments.
All great masters are chiefly distinguished by the
power of adding a second, a third, and perhaps a fourth
step in a continuous line. Many a man had taken the
first step. With every additional step you enhance
immensely the value of your first.
Let this be understood, then, at starting; that
the patient conquest of difficulties which rise in
the regular and legitimate channels of business and
enterprise is not only essential in securing the
success which you seek but it is essential to that
preparation of your mind, requisite for the enjoyment
of your successes, and for retaining them when
gained …. So, day by day, and week by week; so,
month after month, and year after year, work on,
and in that process gain strength and symmetry,
and nerve and knowledge, that when success,
patiently and bravely worked for, shall come,
it may find you prepared to receive it and keep it.
