But before we get into what came first – the egg or the hen, let us check out for once the importance of the word ‘Danger’ in our psyche. Whenever, we see danger our response converts from a ‘normal response’ to one of ‘alarmed response’. For people who are unaware, they think that both the responses are interchangeable….but it is not so. Here it is why. Whenever, we sense danger, there is an organ within our brain called Amygdala which short-circuits the brain. At the sight of danger, the amygdala fires and flares up the circuit related to our emotion which eventually flares up secretion of hormones and neuro-transmitters responsible for Flight or Fight response. It prepares the body and mind for a heightened response for meeting the perceived danger. Another very damaging aspect of this physiological priming up is that the circuits responsible for thought processes are paralysed either partly or fully.
How often we have heard that a person lost his senses while in a fit of rage or out of morbid fear?!!! We feel it or not, everytime we are angry or fearful, our thought processes are impaired at least partly. We only tend to cater to those thoughts which justify the fear or anger leaving aside thoughts to the contrary. This explains the self-righteous monologue of angry persons. Though these stress hormones and neuro-transmitters create heightened response to meet the danger, it injects enough toxins within the body for long-term damage. Once the situation is over, the heightened response requirement is also gone but the toxins continue to damage the system indefinitely.
