When Ads Kill the Article

I belong to a number of sites; and I use Stumbleupon.  This is a site where you put down your likes.  You click on it, and it gives you site after site.

Years ago, it was fantastic.  You’d see so much, you’d learn so much.  Then advertisers took advantage.

You may notice that on some writing/publishing sites there are so many ads that you don’t remember what you are reading.

In some cases, when they are ‘quiet’ you can pass them without notice.  But when they are popping up and blocking views; well, how committed are you to reading this item?

On Stumbleupon; my answer is Not.

As soon as there is a pop up, I hit the Stumble button and go to another site.  I don’t know what I site I left was about, I don’t stick.  And I don’t think many others do either.

The problem with ads is the same as with commercials.  Most people would sit through a 1 minute commercial.  But now that there are five minutes of commercial… well… you know the drill.

Show goes black, time for the bathroom, or getting a snack from the kitchen, or checking your email, or making a quick phone call, or ….  you’d be surprised how much you can do in five minutes.

So whomever paid all that money to have their commercial in that break… well…  I don’t think they spent their money wisely.

If you put a gun to my head and asked me to name five commercials currently airing on my local station, my brains would be splattered all over the wall.

And I think there are many people like me.

On the Internet, unlike Television, you are in control.  So, you stumble on.

On other sites, where I’m trying to read something, and pop up comes up, it annoys me so much, I close the window.  If there is a little X and I see it, I’ll close the pop up… but I better see the X fast.

Advertisers should be warned, disrupting a website with a pop up, or overwhelming a page leads to consumer rebellion.  People may see your ad, but in their annoyance, will not buy your product.

    • If you do not want Ads to appear in your blog then you could have your own personal blog where there will be no Ads. In sites such as this you get paid from revenue generated through Ads.

      • The fact is, when a visitor is assaulted by so many ads and pop ups they leave. They don't say..."Oh, I'll sit here and take it because it is good for the site and the writer."

You have to appreciate that the viewer has no vested interested in the site. They don't care if the site lives or dies. They came here because they learned there was an article here on something they were interested in.

They come, too many ads, they leave, go to another site.
