A thought for seniors

Getting old is inevitable but living with dignity in one’s twilight years is what a senior has to work on. Living with old time beliefs, and pushing them on to the next generation will be their undoing.  With a bit of adjustment and merging with what is trending seniors can have a great life. But sadly it is not to be. Stuck in their own hole and refusing to budge  is the main reason that seniors are a disgruntled lot.

While children are encouraged by parents  to leave the shores seeking greener pastures it is not fair that seniors expect them to be around. That their children will not be available when they are most wanted is what seniors should accept and make alternative arrangements such as shifting to a senior home. There are great homes for seniors where every kind of facility is available. Both children and the parents should accept the fact that this will be in the best interest of seniors as gone are the days when domestic help was available. Also living alone is quite a risky proposition. Sickness, most often than not becomes a constant companion of seniors and that is the time living in a senior home becomes necessary.

No child will ignore their parents if it is in their hands. Children have their own burden of responsibilities that take bulk of their time. Expecting children to be at their beck and call is what seniors  should give up. 

When it comes to finances it is time seniors learn to be independent and this starts quite early in life. To live with dignity and not depend on their children should be foremost in their mind. 

Spending their time doing social work is yet another way to remain busy usefully thus society giving them a pride of place. Having hobbies such gardening, photography……….could keep them happily occupied. 

Making a martyr and having self pity is a senior’s undoing. 

Giving up their old school thoughts and making attempts to merge with changed times is the secret to live comfortably where the younger generation would accept such seniors with open arms.
