Years ago, I saw a tee shirt with that sentiment emblazoned upon it. I thought about it, and it bothered me because I couldn’t understand it.
It just didn’t seem to make logical sense.
As time passed, a couple of things happened. Common, easy things that occur every day.
I had heard some people talking about a topic I happened to know and they were getting it wrong. It would be like someone saying England is South of France, or Nigeria is on the East coast of Africa.
I went to interpose and they slapped my remarks away as mosquitoes and repeated their opinion, clinging to their error.
No matter what I said they were certain they were right. My words were wastes of breath.
Other people tried to ‘comfort’ me, some saying, let them make the mistake, what do you care? But I kept feeling that somehow I had ‘failed’.
As I got older I learned to keep my mouth shut.
If I know that road is closed and you say you’re going to drive on it, if you are my friend, if you are asking me, I have the answer.
If I don’t know you, and you aren’t paying me any attention, and my words will just drift into the either, well, irie said speed, as we say in Yard.
Often, this kind of thing happens to me on writing sites and probably has happened to you.
You’ll read an item, see the error and leave a comment because you really know what you are talking about.
Maybe you’re a computer technician and they are describing a situation on their laptop.
Maybe you are a lawyer and actually know the law on the subject they are discussing.
Maybe you live in the city they are describing and they have gotten it wrong.
So you take time and write a comment. You explain in clear words the facts and they attack you. They tell you why you are wrong.
Years ago, I’d probably give chapter and verse to ‘defend’ my position. Now my response is ‘sure’.
So I understand the statement now. For after I write ‘sure’ I tend to find myself smiling.
I’m not angry, I’m not upset, I am not disgusted.
I’m just amused.
