Cauvery water Dispute leading to ugly situations in Karnataka and Tamilnadu

It is not as if that the world has not had any other river water sharing disputes. There have been disputes and issues over water sharing of rivers in Europe and Asia.

Even Indian states have had other states’ disputing over river water sharing like Punjab and Haryana over Satluj River.

Yet the Cauvery water dispute among the southern Indian states of Karnataka and Tamilnadu has had a very ugly history and is turning uglier.

The dispute is not new and dates back to early 1900s. In 1991, centre referred the case to a higher judicial bench.

In some years between, the courts directed Karnataka government to release certain amounts of water to Tamilnadu from Cauvery river basin, which is the lifeline of many farmers and also used by many for drinking water purpose in both the states.

Sometimes, Tamilnadu protested saying that the released water is insufficient for them.

At other times, Karnataka protested saying they have less water in reservoirs and can’t release as much water as directed.

To cut to the present, what happened was that court directed Karnataka Government to release certain amount of water to Tamilnadu. Now Karnataka Government is constitutionally bound to release that X amount of water to Tamilnadu.

However, indirectly their supported Trade Unions and Unions of Bus Services, Auto services and many other industries started protesting and organizing bandhs.

They started violent protests. People of Tamil origin begin to get targeted. As per reports, while individuals have not been attacked, people’s vehicles, shops and buses have been gutted. Life in cities like Bengaluru(better known as Bangalore) and Mysore and the connecting highways has been thrown out of gear. Companies and schools and colleges have to be shut down for days in between. Metro services were suspended for a while. Such arson and violence also creates fear and panic, as other places’ experience has shown that arsonists and rioters sometimes start killing, torturing people and often target females and children too.

Now, more police has been called in and Army or other forces too have been put on standby.

However, what is deplorable is that the state governments have been indirectly fueling the violence instead of reining in the rioters.

Issues can be resolved peacefully with a sane mind and tolerance and empathy for fellow beings. What is intolerable is fueling violence that puts public at inconvenience and risk.

I hope that the public also puts a pressure on their Governments to resolve the issues peacefully and not indulge in hatred towards people of other state.

    • Sounds like the Government needs to get their act together. Pray that the violence stops. The situation must be quite stressful for the citizens in India and Asian countries. It seems as if the Government would put a stop to the violence instead of creating more problems.
