You Don’t Know Who

It is almost, but not really funny, that after 26 years of existence, the same tricks that newbies fell for in 1990 are working in 2016.

Unless you can have coffee with Forge at Aladin,  or meet Airdog by cinema, you don’t know who they are.  You don’t know if that is a real photo or an image taken from the Net.

You don’t know if Linny is a man, a woman 22 or 62 unless you shared lunch.

People join sites and give whatever info they want, or no info at all.   They can hide behind Worf when they are closer to Ferangi.   They can dazzle with with gorgeous photos, or pretend to be children when they are 50 year old pederasts.

We played a game on Delphiforums in the 1990s to prove racism/sexism/chauvinism.

Each of us either used our real selves or a facsimile, and a white American man in his thirties as our duals.

Nzinga got no respect, she was nobody from Africa.  BigTom was treated with deference because he was an American.

We wrote many thesi and newspaper reports and all sorts of educational and intellectual papers on the racism/sexism /chauvinism that existed in Cyberspace.

This fact, that you do not know who you are really communicating with, continues.

People still are taken in by various Scams because they can not believe they are scams.

A new writing site emerges.   It is touted on an old writing site.   Members of the older site take a look at the new site.

Some question the business model, some are unsure, (having been ripped off before) and they express their doubts on the older site.

Some new member of the Older Site says he has ‘phoned’ the owner of the new site, and owner told him…..

And members of the Older Site actually believe this.

India has over One Billion People.   That is a lot of people. Yet, amazingly, this member can phone the Owner of the New Site up, just like that, to Prove it is Not a Scam.

As I sit in stunned silence, member after member discuss the phone call, using the name of New Member as complete proof that the New Site is legitimate.

It is an unfunny joke that for some reason, the mentality of people on the ‘Net is so trusting, so willing to accept this kind of insanity without the slightest question, that they will repeat it.

In Real Life I have been privy to certain information.  I have been physically present when certain things have been said or done.  Yet, people don’t instantly accept my word.

It has happened to you;  the teacher is overheard telling another teacher that she’s giving a pop quiz on Friday.

You heard, you tell your friends, they tell others, but on Friday, when she gives that pop quiz, how many kids actually believed you and studied?

You’ve been at work and seen one married person being friendly with another married person, and told someone what you saw, and they wave you away as a mosquito.

Yet, on the Internet the entire dynamic is reversed.  People believe what they are told, and refuse to release that grip on fantasy.

The fact particular sites are created to be Scams and are Scams is slapped away by those who plunge head first into a sewer.

So here is an Old Writing Site.   On it comes a blurt that a new site has just come on the market.   When the veterans of Triond, Expertcolumn, Bubblews, etc. question this new site, up pops a Newbie, touting the site.

The Newbie, going for overkill, claims he spoke to the owner.

And people actually believe him.

They don’t think;  hey, this is probably the New Site Owner or his pal coming here to get fresh blood.

    • Yes, different people have different views about one thing but we must try to know what is reality working behind it. The profiles of online dating scammers can exhibit some clear signs that something is off—you just need to know what to look for. Most scammers choose victims that are older than they are, for example, so if someone who is significantly younger than you says that they’re interested, it could be cause for concern. Of course, just because someone is younger doesn’t mean that they’re a scammer; it’s just something to keep in mind.

Scammers also often list themselves as widowed (especially with a child), self-employed, or working overseas. They might also say that they live near you, but that they’re away; they could be in another country on a trip or for work, but they’ll almost certainly be somewhere far away where you can’t meet them.

Scammers are good at being charming and saying all the right things—and they start it fast. They have a lot of victims to get through, so they’re going to try to move things along as quickly as possible. They’ll hit you with the full force of their charm; they’ll say sweet things, compliment you a lot, and talk about how perfect you are for each other within the first couple weeks.

Think about if you would find it strange for someone to be acting like this if you just met in real life. If someone was expressing over-the-top love and passion within a couple weeks, you’d be worried.
