How to Reuse Egg Shells in your Garden

Whenever I am in the kitchen, I would try to recycle , reuse, 

reduce trash items into good use.

One of the common ingredient that I usually use in my cooking

 session is eggs!

I use eggs for baking, cooking, steaming and my family’s favorite 

egg bread for breakfast.

My son and hubby loves sunny side up eggs while my daughter 

and I prefer scrambled eggs with nothing, sandwiched between 

2 slices of wholewheat bread.

So, what do you do with those egg shells after you had cracked the 

eggs?

Most people would just toss them into the bin but I don’t do that.

What to do with empty egg shells

I had been compiling all the dried egg shells in a 

toilet paper roll plastic bag ( reuse the bag) so that I 

could use them for my gardening purpose.

You can reuse egg shells for your garden :

l compost pile, 

l protect your plants pointed leaves from bending

 or 

l a natural kitchen fertilizer- save money

Egg shells are benefit your gardening 

l Egg shells help to increase calcium  and protein into 

your garden compost pile.

l Egg shells decompose quickly when you crumble 

them, toss them onto the compost.

l Garden plants such as tomatoes, spinach, kangkung 

( water spinach) require nutrient like calcium in order

 to grow well.

l Crumbled egg shells deter pests like slugs and snails

 from eating up your crops

 ( especially leafy vegetables)

l Snails could not move on sharp edges egg shells

 surface because it hurts the sensitive membrane which

 is delicate.

l Use empty egg shell as a whole to protect the sharp

 pointed leaves of your plants ( snake plant and aloe

  vera) from turning brown and bending downwards.

How to dry empty egg shells

1. Wash the cracked egg shells in a basin of water. 

Soap not required.

2. Dry them under the sun or place them on a tray, on

 the kitchen table overnight, it will dry up by the next 

morning.

3. There are 2 ways to crush the egg shells- grind or

crush

4. Grind: Toss them into a coffee grinder or mortar and 

pestle. 

Grind them into coarse pieces not powdery form.

5. Crush: Crush them by stamping the egg shells with 

your feet wearing sandals or slippers.

 You can also use your bare palms to crumble 1 egg 

shell at a time but sometimes the sharp shells hurt. 

Wise to wear a rubber glove.

6. Scatter crushed egg shells over the top of the soil.

 Your plant will naturally absorb the nutrients from the 

egg shells.

7. For planting new plant / vegetable/ flower seeds,

 mix the egg shells with compost. Loosen them.

8. Use a wooden chopstick to poke a deep hole, fill in

 the plant hole with a few seeds and cover up the hole

 with the mixed compost.

Notice that your garden plants and flowers are growing

 beautifully and healthily.

How to use egg shell to protect your plants

In order to prevent your snake plants and aloe vera 

sharp pointed leaves from deteriorate further, use 

empty egg shells to protect the sharp leaves from

 drying up under the sun.

l Use a teaspoon to make a tiny crack under the egg.

l Drain out the whites and egg yolk for your recipes.

l Remember to maintain the egg shell as a whole egg 

intact with a small hole at the bottom.

l Use tap water to wash the inner egg shell.

l Dry the whole egg shell under the sun.

l Place the whole egg shell with the cracked opening

 into the sharp pointed leaf of your plant.
