Hey Taxi–WAIT!!!

Hey Taxi!! That is a common phrase we hear in say New York. Did you know that you can start to hear this phrase too if you live in North Korea? Yes, it is true, it is now cool to be a taxi driver in North Korea.

As more cars hit the road in Pyongyang (a city in North Korea) driving a taxi is becoming a popular occupation in North Korea. This is a good thing right? There are many benefits to becoming a taxi driver in North Korea’s changing economy and here are some of them and it is more than just now being able to have a job.

Being a Taxi Driver in North Korea is now:

–A Job

–It is safe

–Foreign money can be earned

–Reduces the need for a car in such a small country with many people.

–Benefits the men and allows them  to feed their families.

–One gets to be in the cool air or even air condition.

North Korea is currently doing a  “200-day battle”. This is a mass mobilization in North Korea movement that requires ordinary North Koreans to volunteer FREE labor. This is a long 200 day event and it is usually in the hot weather months. Taxi drivers can do this battle and while others are in the heat, they can enjoy the cool breeze and even air condition, as they drive and earn money. This alone makes the appeal of becoming a taxi driver high.

Taxi companies that are looking for drivers do not issue a public announcement or a job ads, because the demand is so high and everyone wants to do this. The main way that people get started is by personal networking and even via companies. Perhaps, with the economy of North Korea changing, others things like politics will begin to change too. Well, here is my taxi…gotta go!
