When a child is down with a cold, fever, cough or diarrhea, it is a a natural for him to be in a bad, foul mood for days or weeks.
His unhappiness is as “contagious” as his sickness, it is “spreadable” throughout the whole family members.
Here are a few tips how to keep your sick child happy
When your sick child is really sick, parents or caregivers, especially grandparents take extra special care for him with lots of patience, tolerance and consideration.
You would not mind preparing the drinks he requested, foods that is healthy NOT his favorite because he is SICK and you would even tolerate his nonsense excuses, putting aside his drinks or food when he refused out of the blue.
Indeed, you are spoiling your sick child but since he is weak to move about, feeling cranky, listless and tired, helping him around with simple tasks are able to help him feel better.
Get him some new toys or his favorite toys to keep him happy and quiet.
When your sick child is bored, he will be cranky, refused to stay in bed, refused to take his medications or refused to have his meal.
Playing along with him will divert his attention away from his foul mood.
New toys will cheer him up easily .
In addition, his favorite toys also become his instant companionship that may stabilize his mood and crankiness.
Some sick children love to listen to adults story-telling to keep them entertained.
While others, prefer to read story books by themselves quietly.
Keep your sick child entertained by providing him his favorite story books or borrow some books from the local library.
Alternatively, you could give him coloring books, if he likes to color with color pencils or crayons.
Get a drawing book so that he could scribble or draw with his imagination to keep him busy.
Another way to keep your child entertained by himself is watching TV programs.
Make sure that he is watching kids channel that are non-violence but educational.
You can also download his favorite cartoon character videos, transfer into a pen drive or flash drive.
Attach it to the back or side of the LED TV, allow him to watch for 30 minutes, not more than that.
A sick child still needed a rest after a short concentration on TV
Avoid excessive TV watching.
All children dreaded the taste of medicines which are usually bitter, be it syrup or pill.
You can mask the taste of bitter syrup by mixing with fruit juice, milk or fruit smoothie.
I used to mix it with my son’s formula milk which managed to trick him into drinking up the mixture.
The worst scenario was when he puked or vomited the syrup medicine if used by force.
Forcing your child to drink up medicine would worsen the situation.
You can also reward taken your child with his favorite chocolate milk or Yogurt drink after he had taken his medication.
Keep using different methods to encourage your child to take his medication.
Conclusion
Fortunately, most children’s common sickness are likely to recover within a few days to a week.
As soon as your child had began to feel better, STOP kowtowing to him like a servant.
He may show tantrum and become demanding.
Give him some time to adjust back his regular routine.

I totally agree with you. Once the child had recovered from their sickness. Let us gradually remove the good privileges during the time of being sick. We still need to emphasize our role as an adult over them. Some children can be deceiving too. They can pretend to feel sick, even if they are not. They tend to do this because parents are weak in seeing them sick. We need to be good in determining this kind of behavior.
parents turn into jellies and soft heart when kids are sick. So this is the best time when kids could use this opportunity to make parents abide whatever they wanted.
However, when they had recovered, it was hard for them to adjust back their normal lifestyle
This is really funny. I remember the time i was still small. the time of sickness, though dreaded, was always an enjoyable one. i make orders of the things i want to eat or drink and they are brought with immediate effect. but once you show any sign of recovery, you are on your own.
yeah it is true, once you are recovering, all the good stuffs are gone, so are your part time servants!
Sick kids will always want to have someone near them someone who will encourage them and keep them company. That's one thing that any sick person would want just some company will make them feel well. I remember when I got sick my mum would constantly check on me, I would have my favorite meals, always listen to music whenever I wanted too, so everything happened the way I wanted because people around you feel or think that when they do stuff for you you will get better much faster. As for the medicine part my mum was very strict on that and nothing would stop her from making you take your medication. She was very harsh but after taking it she would be kind enough to give you something sweet to sweeten your mouth as she tells you that you will be better off after that.
